What Is a Sprint?

Sprint orienteering is an exciting and relatively new form of orienteering. It consists of short, fast courses between 2 km and 4 km in length. The expected winning time for a sprint is generally 12–15 minutes. Unlike classic orienteering, sprint orienteering is not limited to the wilderness. It's short format is ideal for urban parks and university campuses.

A good sprint course will force competitors to think fast. This is achieved with fast open running, tricky route choices, and lots of quick direction changes. At the same time, sprint courses typically don't require expert map reading ability, so new orienteers can try their skills against the best in the club.

What is the BAOC Sprint Series?

Throughout 2009, BAOC will be offering a variety of sprint races. At each of these events, you can earn ranking points. These points are calculated using the USOF Ranking algorithm. At the end of the year, all the participants will be ranked based on their five best scores.

Awards will be given to the highest-scoring men and women in various age divisions.

Most of our BAOC Sprint Series events are also registered with the North American Sprint Series (http://www.sprintseries.org/). This is a great year to focus on sprints, because the Bay Area will be hosting the North American Sprint Championships (http://3g.terraloco.com/) in November.
