Change in plans: The course will be a Score-O instead of a Line-O. See the Course Setter's Notes for more information.

Our Oakland hills street map, with its curvy roads, staircases, and darling houses, shines again during one of the most festive trick-or-treat outings in the Bay Area. I will set a "Line-O" course taking you through the best Halloween (or Hallowe'en (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween), if you prefer) decorations and trick-or-treat action. You will enjoy the distractions!

How does a Line-O work? The map will be printed with a route about 4 to 5 km long—you must follow the route. Along the way, you will see special markers. I'm not sure yet what they will be, but you will know what to look for. Mark your map with your own control circle at each location you see them.

This evening event will run from 5:00 to 9:30 PM.

Rolling Dunes restaurant at 3331 Lakeshore Ave. will serve as the event headquarters and social gathering place. They serve crepes, pasta, salads, and sandwiches to all ages. You can sign a registration form with me inside, go out and do the course with some folks, and enjoy some food and drink if you like when you return. People will be hanging out. I will stay until 9:30, which is near the closing time of the restaurant. I won't start anyone later than 8:30.

Driving Directions

From Interstate 580, take the Grand Ave exit coming from either direction. At the light, go straight through to the next light, which will be Lakeshore Ave. Turn left onto Lakeshore. There is a traffic light at a pedestrian crossing. Start to look for parking, because Rolling Dunes restaurant is only a few doors down on the left at 3331 Lakeshore Ave.

Public Transit

From San Francisco's Transbay Terminal, you can take the AC Transit NL bus. When it turns right off of Grand Ave, by the Interstate 580 Freeway overpass, get off at the next stop, and walk following the bus to Lakeshore Ave. Turn left, walk under the freeway, and follow Lakeshore for about a block, where you will find Rolling Dunes restaurant on the left at 3331 Lakeshore Ave.

From 19th St BART in Oakland, catch the same AC Transit NL bus, and follow the directions above. Also, you can take the AC Transit 57 line locally, and follow similar directions. If you're coming from the east on the 57 bus, use the Lakeshore stop, and walk backwards to Lakeshore, and turn left to look for the Rolling Dunes restaurant at 3331 Lakeshore Ave.
