Millbrae Street Scramble is a street orienteering event in the city of Millbrae, 10 miles south of San Francisco. About thirty point-valued controls will be placed in and around Millbrae. Visit controls in any order to accumulate as many points as you can within your chosen time limit: 90 minutes or 3 hours. Foot and bike divisions are offered!
NOTE: This event is presented by Meridian Geographics, and some details will be different from BAOC events.
The event will again be based near the library, in the heart of downtown. Of course there will be a completely new set of controls. You will have a chance to visit the central business district, many of Millbrae's parks, the older part of Millbrae straddling the old mission road El Camino Real, and the residential hills including the former estate of Darius Ogden Mills. The strong and ambitious may visit the Crystal Springs watershed and spots in neighboring Burlingame and San Bruno. At each control, you will answer a simple question to prove you were there.
This is a mass-start event. Everyone will start at 10:00 a.m. There is no other available start time! Maps will be issued at 9:30 for pre-Scramble strategizing. Please plan to arrive between 8:00 and 9:00 to allow time for registration.
Street Scramble was created as a warm-up for Night & Day Challenge, which is an urban rogaine. Following rogaine tradition, we will use a USGS topographic map at 1:25,000 scale. It is not as detailed as an orienteering map, and the symbols are slightly different. Also, some things have changed since the map was created in 1997, and we have corrected only the parts that are most important to your navigation.
Team participation is encouraged. Teams may consist of up to five members. Of course, solo participation is also available.
Refreshments will be served to all after the 11:30 and 1:00 finishes. This will be a great chance to relax and socialize with other orienteers. We have an indoor space available in case of rain.
For each time limit (90 minutes & 3 hours) and each division (foot & bike), award ribbons will be granted to the top five finishers in eight classes:
- Men
- Women
- Mixed
- Veteran Men (average team age 50+)
- Veteran Women (average team age 50+)
- Mixed Veteran (average team age 50+)
- Junior (all team members 18 or under)
- Family (at least one team member 12/under, not in backpack)
Millbrae Street Scramble is presented by Meridian Geographics, the business owned by Terry Farrah and Eric Bone. It is a format that has been very popular in the Seattle area since 2004. In its second year, Millbrae Street Scramble is the only Street Scramble in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is a great way to introduce newcomers to orienteering!
