Date: (Sun.) Mar. 11, 2007
Location: San Jose, CA
Event Director: - 408.878.5073
Course Setters: Derek Maclean, Dean French, Jim Fish
Type: B; Standard seven courses (White through Blue), plus Long Orange course

Note: Remember that clocks go forward an hour Sunday morning.

Please join us for the 2007 Spring meet in the southern section of Joe Grant park. This year's meet will be held a little earlier than usual, when the poison oak should not be as abundant. With luck, the weather gods will still smile on us. Mark your calendars for one of the Bay Area's classic venues.

All seven course levels, plus Long Orange, will be offered. The vital statistics are below, and more information is available in the Course Setters' Notes.

The standard event schedule and fees will apply.

Beginner's clinics are short explanations of orienteering, adequate to prepare anyone for the White course.

The White, Yellow, and Orange courses will start and finish close to the parking and assembly area.

We plan to use a high start for the advanced courses (including Long Orange), allowing us to access some of the nicer terrain in the park back-country. Shuttles will take advanced-course runners up Mt Hamilton road to navigate back to the Finish at the main park, with a net descent of 250 m. It should be fast and fun, but don't worry, we'll make sure to throw in some climb and route-choice challenge to slow you down a little.

Here are the course statistics:

    Course Length Climb Controls
    White 2.6 km 45 m 11
    Yellow 3.4 km 80 m 14
    Orange 4.7 km 210 m 11
    Long Orange 6.2 km 230 m 18
    Brown 4.7 km 145 m 13
    Green 5.7 km 205 m 16
    Red 6.9 km 250 m 16
    Blue 8.1 km 320 m 19

The following note was added February 23:

Anyone ready for some "real" orienteering again? Your organizing team have been hard at work putting together a quality meet for you in Joe Grant (South), coming up soon on March 11th. This year the advanced courses will visit some beautiful and rarely used areas in the upper reaches of the park, making it fresh even for club veterans.

The event will need much volunteer help to succeed. In addition to the usual tasks (starts, finishes, control pickup, etc.), we are particularly in need of drivers and vehicles to shuttle runners to the remote start up Mt Hamilton Rd. If you can drive shuttles, or have a larger vehicle that we could use to transport runners, we will be pleased to hear from you. Please consider helping with this or other tasks. Volunteers make our world go round!

Driving Directions

To reach the park, take I-680 to the Alum Rock Avenue exit in San Jose. Head east on Alum Rock to Mt. Hamilton Road. Take a right onto Mt. Hamilton, and proceed about 7.5 miles to the park entrance, which will be on your right.

After paying the $5 entry fee (which might require exact change), go about 0.25 mile to the parking area designated by the O' signs.
