Emerald Hills

Date: (Sat.) Feb. 24, 2007
Location: Redwood City, CA
Event Director: - 650.365.4275
Course Setter: Steve Beuerman
Type: C; Sprint, a Western Massachusetts Rules Score-O, and a Potluck dinner

Note: This is an afternoon event. The normal event schedule will not apply. (However, the normal fees will apply.)

Join us for a Street-O in the hills above Redwood City. You'll enjoy the crooked streets and terrific views. We will have a standard easy White course for families and beginners, and two types of more-advanced courses: a Western Massachusetts Rules Score-O, and a Sprint.

The Score-O will use the "Western Massachusetts Rules"—that is, there will be 22 controls in the Emerald Hills neighborhood, and you will need to collect a certain number of the controls in any combination. There are four length categories that determine how many controls you'll need to get:

Max and Victoria at the Emerald Hills Street-O in 2003, after answering the question "How many skunks on the fence?"

You won't need to decide which category you are in until you finish. But note that there is no bonus for visiting more controls than you need (i.e., 9 controls puts you in the Short category with all those who found only 5). The results for each category are based on time.

The other advanced course, the Sprint, will have 12 controls in a small area. It's a point-to-point course, and it's part of the BAOC Spring Sprint Series. Sprints are fun! They're short and anybody can do them.

The White course for families and beginners will be about 3 km long.

See the Course Setter's Notes for more details.

We will extend the Start window to 3 hours, so you'll have time to do the Sprint and then go out on the Score-O if you'd like to get more exercise.

You can start on any of the courses any time between 1:00 and 4:00 P.M. Sprint starts are open until 4:30. Contestants must be back by 5:00 P.M., except those on the Sprint course who must check in by 5:15.

This is a good event for beginners, and short beginner's clinics will be offered on request between 12:30 and 1:30. Groups of 8 or more, adventure race navigation training groups, scouts, home school groups, JROTC, etc., please let us know at least a week in advance so that we'll have enough maps printed.

We have reserved the multi-use room at Roy Cloud School for our 5:30 potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share. The club will provide drinks, plates, cups and utensils.

The BAOC 2006 Distinguished Service Award winner will be announced at the dinner.

Volunteers are needed for the clinics, Start, Finish, and results.

Come out and enjoy a winter day with us.
