Joaquin Miller Park

Date: (Sun.) Aug. 6, 2006
Location: Oakland, CA
Event Director: - 510.681.6181
Course Setters: Rex Winterbottom, Joe Scarborough
Type: C; White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Green, and USOF Sprint courses

NOTE: This event REQUIRES PREREGISTRATION for ALL participants. See below for more information.

Redwood trees. The sacred grove, beautiful, gentle undulating, challenging, and without much brush, haven of the USOF Sprint set by Joe Scarborough. You must climb along the Brown or Green course to get to it. We will minimize the harshness and maximize your orienteering flow potential — if you remember my China Camp courses from 2005, I'm hoping to aim for a similar effect. (The Sprint earns points for Peter Gagarin's USOF Sprint series (http://petergagarin.org/), not USOF ranking points.)

Beginners will have a treasure trove of White, Yellow, and Orange courses traversing the areas around the meadow, and will have the special privilege of encountering the most colorful variety of park features, such as man-made cavalcades and other such monuments. And for everybody, expect some big-time bay views (http://www.oaklandnet.com/parks/facilities/parks_joaquin_miller.asp) of the city skylines!

All within Oakland city limits, eminently qualifying this event for the Urban Festival of Orienteering (http://whatitiz.biz/baoc/20060804_06_ufo/flyer.html).

Poison oak: The courses will be set to avoid most of it, but be aware of what it looks like, and pants would be recommended for the Orange course and above.

The park meadow (http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=robinson+dr+%26+joaquin+miller+rd&csz=oakland%2C+ca) is the meeting area — see the Directions below. Registration is open 9:30 to noon in the meadow, starts are available from 10:00 to 12:30, courses close at 2:00. We will have short beginner's clinics starting at 9:45.

There will be a remote unmanned finish for the Brown and Green courses near the Sprint start, which will be manned. If you plan on doing the Sprint, give yourself time to get up there, whether you are doing the Brown or Green course or not! You should plan to arrive at the Sprint start no later than 1:00.

A potluck picnic will receive finishers in the meadow — bring goodies to share — food and drink — BAOC will supply plates, napkins, cups, etc. and a few of the refreshments.

Electronic punching will be used for the Brown, Green, and Sprint courses. If you don't own an e-stick, please let us know during preregistration, as rentals are only available to preregistrated participants.

We need volunteers for starts, finishes, results, and control pickup.

See the Course Setter's Notes for more information.

Go uphill (east) on JMR for about 0.7 mile; the park entrance is on the left (look for the orienteering sign). The cross street for the park entrance is Sanborne, the upper end (not the lower end with the gate). Park in one of the designated lots or on Joaquin Miller Road. The event center is in the meadow just below the road right at the entrance to the park.
