2006 Sierra Ski-O Championships
Building for the 2007 US Ski-O Championships
The 2006 ski-O season is building on the success of the recent years for a possible BAOC hosted US Ski-O Championships in 2007. In 2005, we offered four ski-O competition days (two at Bear Valley) and had record attendance. In 2006, we're offering a new venue (Tahoe Donner), another four days of competition, and a modified championship format that will better prepare our skiers for national and international competition. We will continue to encourage the development of less competitive skiers (often beginners and novices) by making sure everyone can race on a course that challenges their developing skiing skills.
Qualifier Events
In 2006, the qualifying events for the Sierra Ski-O Championships include:
January 22 Tahoe XC (North Lake Tahoe in Burton Creek State Park) February 4 Tahoe Donner XC (Truckee, near Donner Summit) February 5 Royal Gorge XC (Donner Summit, near Truckee) February 26 Bear Valley XC (near Arnold)
Competitive Classes
At each BAOC ski-O event, you can compete with everyone doing the same course you choose to use, and your resulting performance score on that course will be automatically entered into the appropriate USOF competition class for the Sierra Ski-O Championships, which now require only one event for qualification.
For the Sierra Ski-O Championships, the more competitive and experienced orienteers can use the following USOF gender-age classes that match them with other competitors of similar physical potentials:
Males Females Common Name Participant Ages ----- ------- ----------- ---------------- M-16 F-16 Junior Scholastic Up to 16 M-20 F-20 Scholastic Up to 20 M-21+ F-21+ Open Anyone, typically 21-39 Amazon Amazon Any woman on the longest course M40+ F40+ Masters 40 and older M55+ F55+ Grand Masters 55 and older
Anybody who doesn't feel like racing the best in their gender-age class can compete in the following gender classes on easier courses:
Class Participants ----- ------------ M-Red Males 21-39 on the red course M-Green Males 21-54 on the green course F-Green Females 21-39 on the green course M-Orange Any males on the the orange course (typically novices) F-Orange Females 21-54 on the orange course (typically novices) M-White Any males (typically new skiers) F-White Any females (typically new skiers)
Women are free to compete in the male categories, but men are restricted to competing in only the male categories. The Amazon class is unique to BAOC ski-O events--it's a class created so women can compete with other women on the longest course (USOF doesn't provide a unique class for this). The Amazon class is used only for the Sierra Ski-O Championships, not for USOF or IOF championships. What did you expect? Only in California.
Anyone can compete in one or more classes, but they can only use one result for the championships per event (for the longest and most competitive course they do at that event). Additional courses skied at any event are not used in championship calculations.
Courses Offered at Each Event
We'll be offering the standard four USOF ski-O courses plus one. USOF recommends using white, orange, red, and blue, but we'll add a green course (short advanced), so nearly all the competitive classes can compete on advanced courses (though some will definitely be easier than others).
Course Short Long Classes ------ ----- ---- ------- White 2-3 km 3-5 km F-white, M-white Orange 3-5 km 5-7 km F-16, F-20, F55+, F-orange, M-orange Green 5-7 km 7-10 km F40+, F-green, M-16, M-20, M55+, M-green Red 7-9 km 10-15 km F-21+, M40+, M-red Blue 9-12 km 15-20 km M-21+, Amazon
- Note:
- For two-day events with long courses on both days, the long courses should be reduced in length by 20%.
The point-to-point courses will use the following criteria with climbs around 2% or less (higher climbs will require shorter courses):
Course Description ------ ----------- White Beginner and very easy intermediate trails. Easy route choices with controls located at trail junctions or midway on trails but easily seen.
Orange Intermediate trails with moderate route selection difficulty (legs can include multiple decision points (junctions) on intermediate trails). Skiers can be tested for intermediate climbing and descent skills as well as stopping to punch in on moderate hills.
Green Same as red and blue courses but without extreme challenges and around 50 percent as long as blue. Use expert trails and test for advanced climbing and descents on semi steep hills. Can be a shortened red/blue course.
Red Same as blue course only about 75 percent as long. This can be a shortened blue course.
Blue Anything goes on regularly groomed expert and intermediate trails. Can test expert skier's skills for climbing, descents, distance, and speed. Route selection is be complex. 100-point skier should finish in 60-65 minutes.
Score-O courses will typically use the same control setup with different time limitations for the white, orange, green, red, and blue courses. Easy, intermediate, and advanced controls can be differentiated by control numbers for easy identification by our skiers.
Awards for Competition and Participation
The Sierra Ski-O Championships will offer two types of awards each year for competition and participation. There will be no residency or club membership requirements for these awards.
The competition awards are A-meet medals that include a custom design for the Sierra Ski-O Championships.
The top three finishers in each gender-age classes will receive these full-sized A-meet medals in recognition of their competitive excellence. The top three finishers in each of the easier gender classes, like M-white, will receive smaller medals in recognition of their developing skills, which we definitely encourage.
The participation award will be the largest award (4x6 magnetic award), and it will be awarded to each and every person to attends all of the Sierra Ski-O Championship qualifier events in a competitive or volunteer capacity. These people do wonders for us by coming to every event, so we plan to make a big deal about their various contributions--the more they do, the more we mention about what they did for us when we present their awards. Honorary mention will be made of others who make major contributions but cannot attend all events.
Updated Sierra Ski-O Championship Rules
The Sierra Ski-O champions shall be determined by points that are awarded as follows:
- Scores are accumulated for all Sierra Ski-O Championship qualifier events.
- You qualify for the competition as soon as you complete your first race, and your scores are an accumulation of your racing scores plus allowances for volunteering once in a capacity that prevents you from racing and for up to one absence (see below for details).
- Racing scores are calculated as a percentage of the winner's time (point-to-point events) or controls and time (score-O events) for each class at each event.
- For point-to-point events, the winner of each class automatically receives 100 points and everyone else in the same class receives a percentage based on their time. The points, not the placings, are recorded for the championships.
- For score-O events, we combine the scores used for controls found and time spent as follows:
- Determine the percentage of controls found compared to the most found by someone in the same class.
- Determine the percentage of time on the course compared to the fastest person who found the same number of controls.
- Multiply the two percentages to determine the final score.
- To omit the confusion over which score-O courses are used for each championship class, we will identify the score-O courses as white, orange, green, red, and blue (same controls, different time limits).
- To encourage people to volunteer as course setters and directors (or any other job that the BAOC Ski-O Committee agrees prevents them from racing), we are awarding each of those volunteers their top score for any Sierra Ski-O class that year as the score for their one compensated volunteer event (for the same class). If you score 100 in one of your races, you would score 100 for being a director. Other jobs, which do not prevent people from racing, will be recognized, as always, in the credits listed for the event.
- To allow for one unavoidable absence (not everyone can attend all ski-O events), we are awarding one absentee credit which is 90 percent of the average of a person's other scores (this includes the allowance given for volunteering). This is great if you went to all but one event and got scores of 100 at each but not as great (but still quite good) if you scored lower or missed additional events. 90 percent is used because nobody who is absent should score as highly as if they were in attendance, yet it is important to factor in an average performance somehow so as many people as possible are in the competition. It is also important to encourage everyone, even those who won all previous events, to attend the last event. This rule will be reviewed for possible modification before the first event.
- A sporting withdrawal can count as an absence if the competitor prefers to do that (you can claim a sporting withdrawal for any reason, but it uses up your absence allowance), and does not finish the course (at least one control is not punched).
- If you do one course for an event, then do another course for one or more events, you can apply your one absence credit to either course if you have not already used it.
- All people who show up and compete in good faith (no cheating or purposely disruptive behavior), even if they do not finish, receive at least a score of 25 (unless they prefer to use a sporting withdrawal). If you DNF, OVT, MSP, or make a huge mistake that keeps you on the course four times as long as the winner, you get credit for at least trying.
- Tie scores for medaled placings will be broken by first comparing the scores of the tied skiers at their last common event, and then, if the tie score is still not broken, by giving the advantage to the skier who attended the latest event. If the tie scores are still not broken, the tied skiers share the medal.
