Welcome to the San Francisco Presidio. This is an ideal locale for beginning and intermediate orienteers, with relatively easy terrain and plenty of trails and buildings to navigate by. Experienced orienteers should also have a few challenges on the Orange and Long Orange courses. There will be intermediate- and advanced-runner clinics between 10 AM and 11 AM.

Logistics

Short Beginners Clinics are available between 9:30 AM and 12:15 PM. Longer Adventure Racing, advanced, and Intermediate clinics are available between 10 AM and 11 AM.

Write your name and car license on both parts of the punch card before you go to the Start. The Start crew will keep the stub, while you carry the punch card with you. Orienteering rules will disqualify you for incomplete or lost punch cards.

You must check in at the Finish whether or not you complete your course. We will not search for anyone, because this is an open urban park, but we do like to know that everyone is back safely. You have up to three hours to complete a course before orienteering rules disqualify you. Courses close at 2:30 PM, so you should complete your course by then and return to the Finish.

No yelling or loud talking please. Orienteers like to find the controls on their own. Please carry a whistle with you in case you are injured. They are free at the registration desk. Use the whistle only in the event of an emergency.

Water is available at the Start and Finish, and also on all courses except for White. Water and a toilet are located near the registration desk.

Course Comments

The 2006 Presidio event is using a new map made by Zoran Krivokapic in 2002 updated by Ian Tidswell in 2004. Advanced runners will find some new challenges and sites that will make the course more interesting. Beginners and intermediate orienteers will enjoy the color and detail of the new map. The Presidio is an open urban park, so there will be activities in many areas, but this should not interfere with your enjoyment. Please observe the terrain and off-limits areas, and stay within the Park boundaries to avoid traffic.

The Presidio is constantly changing. Please be aware that some changes made since the courses were set may not be mapped.

Residential areas are open, but please use walks and be courteous.

All courses will require crossing roadways (under, across, around) so be careful. All courses provide scenic views of the Presidio and surroundings.

There is some poison oak in spots on the Yellow, Orange, and Long Orange courses. It's low-growing and not too prolific. It can be easily avoided.

Enjoy!
