Course Setters: Bill Wright, Jim Fish
Type: C; White, Yellow, and Orange courses

Escape the Sepember heat with the cooling Bay breezes at Coyote Hills Regional Park.(*) The park is mostly open grassland, so it has easy to moderate navigation, and fantastic views all the way up to Marin. Invite your friends to try orienteering, and bring a picnic lunch. Don't forget to stop at the visitor center to see the exhibits on the Ohlone Indians who made the area their home. Also, the surrounding salt flats and marshes offer great bird-watching.

Bill Wright and Jim Fish have set White (beginner), Yellow, and Orange (intermediate) courses in this small park. The White and Yellow courses typically take from 30 to 90 minutes to complete. As always, you can do a second (and third) course for a reduced fee. See the Course Setter's Notes for more information about the courses.

No pre-registration is necessary — please plan to arrive between 9:30 a.m. and noon (starts are staggered so any time in this window is fine). Short beginner clinics will be offered repeatedly from about 9:30 to 10:30. As always, you must report at the Finish by 2:00 p.m. whether or not you complete your course (we don't want to have to go looking for you!). For more information about the typical costs and schedule at orienteering events, please see our FAQ (http://baoc.org/wiki/FAQ).

There is a $4 entry fee per car, so the more (people per car), the merrier.

Driving Directions

Coyote Hills is conveniently located just north of the east end of the Dumbarton Bridge in Fremont.

From 880 in Fremont, exit at Decoto Rd. (a.k.a. 84 West) and go west onto the freeway that leads to the Dumbarton Bridge. After you are on Highway 84 on your way to the Dumbarton Bridge, about 2 miles west from 880, exit at the Thornton Avenue / Paseo Padre exit (warning: this is the last exit before the toll plaza). Turn right (north) onto Paseo Padre. (Note that both Paseo Padre and Thornton also cross 880, but you don't want to exit at either of these.) After about 1 mile, turn left onto Patterson Ranch Rd, which leads to the park entrance, and follow orienteering signs.

From the Peninsula, take 84 east to the Dumbarton Bridge. After you have crossed the bridge and passed the toll plaza, take the first exit at Thornton Avenue & Paseo Padre. Turn left (north) onto Paseo Padre and proceed about 1 mile. Turn left onto Patterson Ranch Rd, which leads to the park entrance, and follow orienteering signs.

Please note that there is an EBRPD parking fee of $4 per car.

(*) Note: Cooling Bay breezes not guaranteed on the day of the event.
