Bayfront Park Sprint

Date: (Wed.) Aug. 10, 2005
Location: Menlo Park, CA
Event Director: - 408.568.6740
Course Setter: Matthias Kohler
Type: C; Special Wednesday evening sprint event

This special Wednesday evening event offers one sprint course of roughly 3 km in length. This sprint will be part of the National Sprint Series. Entrants should have at least Orange-level orienteering experience. Starts will be available from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, with course closure at 8:00 pm.

Note: No other courses will be available. Unlike almost all BAOC events, beginner instruction and courses will not be available at this event. (The August 20 event (http://baoc.org/wiki/Schedule/2005/Bayfront_Park) at the same park will welcome beginners.)

Registration will be by self-registration only (that is, there will not be a registration crew at the event). Please bring a check for $6 made out to BAOC. We will be using epunch, so remember to bring your e-card (finger stick). Rental e-cards will be available for $3 each -- please bring exact change separate from your registration fee.

Restroom facilities are available, but you should bring your own drinking water. Park in one of the parking lots if possible, but in any case do NOT park along the west (outbound) side of the park road.

This will be a fast, fun event. You will be running at a speed that will make navigation challenging even in this relatively simply park. We will, of course, continue the tradition for this park of not printing the trails on the map.

Last-Minute Course Setter's Note

The course setter, Matthias Kohler, wants to point out that orienteering shoes (or some other shoes providing good traction) should be worn because the recently-cut grass can be slippery, especially on hillsides. Also, watch out for numerous squirrel holes.

Driving Directions

From the Peninsula, take Highway 101 to the Marsh Road East exit. Stay to the left so you can go straight ahead into the park at the traffic signal where Marsh turns right onto Bayfront Expressway.

From the East Bay, cross the Dumbarton Bridge. Go to the fifth traffic light and turn right into the park.

Again, do NOT park along the west (outbound) side of the park road.
