Event Write-Up

It was a great day out at Joe Grant on Sunday. Gorgeous blue skies, green hills, and by several reports, vibrant poison oak. Tac Sugiyama designed some wonderful courses, posing great route-choice decisions. Overall about 214 people came out.
Many thanks to the registration team of Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, Chuck Spalding, and Matthias Kohler. Jeff Lanam ran the E-punch system, shadowed by Dennis Wildfogel. Julia Doubson covered beginner clinics. Thanks to Nick Corsano for running starts, to Tapio Karras, Greg Khanlarov, Theo Verhoeven, and Ann Marie Cody for collecting controls, and to Chuck Spalding for posting event information to the BAOC website. Thanks to Graham Brew for guiding me through the event directing, and again many thanks to Tac Sugiyama for course setting.
Course Setter's Comments About Control #62
Thank you all for coming to the Joe Grant event yesterday, and sorry for some of the Green and Red runners who were affected by missing control 62.
I went up to the control site to fix the problem right after it was reported missing. To my surprise, the control flag was heavily trampled on into the mud, torn, and crumpled with the wireframes completely bent. It was clearly the result of a boar attack, as the ground around it was heavily dug up and broken. The control probably happened to be smack in the middle of the boar's nest.
The real mystery was that the SI unit was nowhere to be found. After searching the whole area dug up by the boar for more than 20 minutes, I finally found it completely buried more than 10 feet away from the control site. The boar must have been really angry!
As an added note, some of the pink tapes used to mark the control sites were also chewed on, partially bit off, or even completely removed and trampled on, especially the ones hanging low by the thickets like the one for control 62.
During the reconnaissance survey, I saw a lot of boars, deer, and wild turkeys. While it is so wonderful to have such a beautiful natural park full of wildlife as an orienteering terrain, we might want to pay extra attention not to disturb the wildlife as much as possible by avoiding sites that might be within their habits, or at least use caution in determining where to set the control units or marking tapes.
Thank you again for your understanding, and I hope you still enjoyed the day on the beautiful hills.
Best,
Tac Sugiyama

Course: White Yellow Orange Silver Brown Green Red Blue
Thanks to everyone who helped put on today's event, which was very well attended. Thanks to event director Taylor Pospisil and course setter Tac Sugiyama. We had gorgeous weather, and a lot of beginners turned out. One glitch was that control 62 went missing, apparently due to an unhappy boar who buried it. Tac went looking, and found it several meters away and under some dirt.
Below are corrected results for the Red and Green courses. Marking control 62 as "Missing" instead of "Bad" resulted in the software trying to account for time spent looking for the control, and I think this did not work correctly. Changing the setting to "Bad" gets the actual timing. I hope I will be able to generate useful splits now, but I wanted to get this information out immediately.
The preliminary standings are below. Thanks to the missing control, it took a while to generate meaningful splits. A few people didn't get a Start punch recorded — I was able to fix two of them.

Also see control-by-control timing in the WinSplits results (http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/show_event.asp?id=103601) and on Attackpoint (https://www.attackpoint.org/eventdetail.jsp/event_58962).
You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=558). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here. For the Green and Red runners that missed the split at #62, I used the guestimated splits from WinSplits (http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/show_event.asp?id=103601).)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
Please tell Jeff Lanam () and the webmasters () if anything needs to be changed.
