Event Write-Up
, Event Director
About 120 participants came out to the Indian Valley Campus in Novato on Mother's Day to orienteer around the campus and surrounding hillsides. The weather was beautiful, if windy, and so were the wildflowers. Petra Sundstrom designed courses with a novel twist — the orienteering started out climbing the hillsides, and culminated with a short Sprint course through the campus. Although there was no Blue course, the Green and Red courses had significant climb, resulting in some very good views for those orienteers who chose to appreciate them.
An event like Indian Valley cannot happen without the support of many volunteers.
- Our course setter, Petra Sundstrom, came up with the concept, and then spent countless hours in course design, vetting, and wrestling with using Condes (course creation software) on a Mac.
- The volunteer honor roll is:
- Setup: Recinda Sherman, Johanna Merriss, Olga Kraght
- Registration: Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, Dennis Wildfogel, Chuck Spalding
- Epunch: Jeff Lanam, Rosemary Johnson
- Beginner Clinics: Sheila Cotter
- Starts: Recinda Sherman, Rex Winterbottom, Scott Aster
- Control Pickup: Steve Gregg, Tac Sugiyama, Petra Sundstrom, Scott Aster, Olga Kraght
- College of Marin liaison: Sarah Paoli (Thanks, Sarah!)
- BAOC website support: Chuck Spalding
One final note: Although there were many happy and satisfied orienteers after the event, it was also clear that a Silver course would have been well received. We have been having Silver courses at more BAOC events. It would be prudent if all future BAOC events with a standard classic format in typical hilly BAOC terrain provide a Silver course for orienteers with advanced skills but who are older, injured, or less physically fit.

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=560). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
Thanks to Gary Kraght and Petra Sundstrom for a great event on a blustery day!
We had a lot of beginners turn out, as well as a solid crew of regulars, and many people helped. The results are below.
I want to make one note: Somehow two White classes and two White courses were created in the system, one with the last control number 39, and one without. As a result, some people who missed number 39 got a splits printout that showed them with an "OK" result. I've merged the two classes to get the accurate standings.
