The day at Lake Herman started cool and overcast, and progressed to cold and raw, but the forecasted rain held off long enough to spare almost everyone except the cadre of valiant afternoon volunteers. On the subject of volunteers, let me begin by thanking all those who made the event successful.

Special thanks to Steph Maclean for providing several hours of the basic survival needs—heat, light, and an internet connection—to a couple of refugees from an extended power outage in the week prior to the event.

The dire weather forecast certainly helped to keep attendance below expectations, at around 100 people. We were happy to see two Girl Scout troops and the Turlock NJROTC contingent.
Since so much of Lake Herman is lacking in complex contour or vegetation detail, it seemed that the best approach to course setting there was to feature long legs with an element of route choice. Green, Red, and Blue all shared a 1 km leg, and each had other long-ish legs. Even with Brown, we were able to set a couple of legs close to 700 m.

- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the start line and leaving the start triangle. The offset can have a huge impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
