Returning to Spring Lake after three long years brought a lot of happiness to me, and to the many participants who came out for the event. Despite torrential downpours early, the rain ceased by 9:30, and mostly stayed away for the rest of the day, allowing us to get in a fun, challenging day of Orienteering.
Due no doubt to the wildfires in the area over the last couple of years, the park has significantly reduced the brush and thickets in the park, allowing more of the terrain to be runnable.
James Roney designed the courses this time, doing a great job making the most of the complex terrain. I heard only good comments about his courses, though several participants on the “Contour” course, described it as “brutal, but fun” (one or two runners may have omitted the “fun” description 😉). James cleverly designed the advanced courses to minimize the sharing of controls, and the controls that were shared were approached from different directions depending on the course.
Along with regular club members, several youth groups came, including Girl Scout troops and Navy ROTC cadets, but the morning rain kept our turnout of beginners rather low. Hopefully, when we next hold an event here, the turnout will be greater.
This event ran very smoothly thanks largely to the great volunteers who spent a great deal of time and effort to make this so.
David Arsenault, the park permit officer, was very helpful in securing our permit. Chuck Spalding made timely updates to the website, including editing my submissions to make them more concise and informative.
James, of course spent hours creating the courses, and hanging all the bags before the event, even picking up some afterwards!
Western Race Services, aka Jay Haan, handled all the E-punch duties, including a large results screen, allowing everyone to see how they did.
Sarah Williams ran the registration table, ably assisted by Steve Haas and Bill Cusworth. Jeff Lanam and George Minarik gave instructional clinics, while James, Bill, and Olga Kraght helped by picking up controls at the end of the day so that we could leave before 4 PM!
Thank you all for helping, and everyone who came for making the event a good one!

Someone left a thumb compass at the Start table. Identify it, and it is yours.

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=505). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between the start line and the start triangle. For most of our local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle. The offset can have a huge impact on your route accuracy.
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
