Event Write-Up
By
This was the 25th anniversary of the first BAOC event held at Point Pinole on April 6, 1997. Steve Gregg made the map and was the Course Setter and the Event Director for the inaugural event. Steve continues to set courses here 25 years later, and he decided to set this year's courses as close as possible to the 1997 courses.
We had decent weather on event day. The forecast originally was for rain beginning around noon, but the front slowed down and we had cool, cloudy weather, and no rain at all.
We were expecting ~200 participants, but only 118 showed up. Maybe some were concerned about the early rain forecast.
Eleven runners from 1997 returned to test their map-reading skill and running speed against their 25-year-younger selves: three on the Orange course, and eight on the Long Orange. The Long Orange "Turn-Back-Time Award" goes to Steph Maclean who beat her 1997 time by nearly 15 minutes. Runner-up was Tapio Karras, who shaved 11 seconds off his 1997 time. Dennis Wildfogel and Gavin Wyatt-Mair were 2 and 6.5 minutes over their 1997 times, respectively. On the Orange course, Jeff Lanam beat his 1997 time by 15 minutes.
Okay, enough about the old-timers. Overall winners were Clara Staats (White course), Penny DeMoss (Yellow course), and Yana Konovalenko (Orange course). Erin Schirm won the Long Orange, edging out Sairgey Pisarchyk by 5 seconds, in a time that was comparable to James Scarborough’s (unofficial) winning time from 25 years ago. The complete results are listed below.
We couldn't put on orienteering events without lots of help. As you can see, we had a fantastic volunteer-turnout year. Thanks so much.
