For our 11th Annual Holiday Lights event, we had 16 teams in the 60-minute division, and 35 teams in the 90-minute division. In comparison to last year's event, this represented a small shift in teams from the 90-minute category to the 60-minute category. We estimated about 150 people were out on the course. It was a bit hard to tell, because Brad and I switched up our roles this year, but it seemed like there were more attendees than last year.
Peter Graube had a good crowd again this year to listen to this year's presentation on climate change.
And the potluck dishes were delicious!
Heartfelt congratulations to Marie-Josée Parayre for being selected for the 2019 BAOC Service Award. Nominations for the award were submitted by club members, and the recipient was selected by the previous recipients. Thank you Marie-Josée for your continuing service to the club!
Thanks for making the 2019 Willow Glen Holiday Lights event possible go to:
- Nancy Lindeman and Brad Wetmore for their wonderful mentorship and support during my first time in the role of an Event Director.
- Brad Wetmore and Stephen Harrison, course setters, for all their hard work on this event.
- Steve Haas for handling registration, and the presentation of the BAOC Service Award.
- Bob Cooley for printing the maps.
- Chuck Spalding for help with the website.
- Marina Keating for handling the insurance.
- Sharon Evans for handling reimbursements.
- Stephen Harrison, Bob Wedig, and Christine and Graham Brew for help with results/finishes.
- Peter Graube for bringing in all the science equipment and giving the annual science presentation.
- Jeff from the San Jose Unified School District who came to our rescue to open the room after a scheduling lapse left us stranded outside at 5 PM, and to Norberto, the custodian, who came back after he had been working at the school all day to clean up after the event.
Huge thanks to all the people who helped set up the room—the tables, registration, and potluck—and then helped clean up after the event.
And everyone for coming out and participating in the event and the end-of-the-year potluck. I really can't think of a better way to start the holidays.
All the results are below. Our apologies if we misspelled your name (it was difficult reading some handwriting of names). If we have your name wrong (or you think you're one of the two people who didn't put their name on their score sheet), let us know, and we’ll correct your listing in the results.
Happy Holidays!

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=462). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- Since this is a Score-O setup with no E-punch, RouteGadget knows only the Start and Finish locations. All the control circles are included directly on the map image.
- You need to enter your name (please also add your Total Points score after your name) and total time in MMMSS format before drawing/uploading your route. For example, 89:52 is entered as 8952.
- When drawing your route, be sure to visit the Finish only after you have completed your route. That is, the blue line pointing to the Finish should follow you throughout your route. You can also upload your GPS track if you have one.
- For the animation, each competitor's speed is averaged out over the whole length of their (manually drawn) route. This works out just fine for Score-O, since competitors often end up taking very different routes.
- To learn to use RouteGadget, view the video here (http://routegadget.net/download.cgi). (Note that the video has no audio!)
The results for the 2019 Willow Glen Holiday Lights Night Score-O event are below. Note that tie scores were decided by elapsed time (i.e., if two entries have the same scores, but different times, the one with less time on the course is placed ahead of the other competitor).
