Event Write-Up
By
129 entrants braved the bear-infested U.C. campus amid screeching Campanile falcons and fluttering moths. We enjoyed a (typical) cool overcast Berkeley summer day, ideal for puzzling out the tricky course traps. An unknown vandal vexed the first set of beginners by swiping control #14, quickly replaced by sprinting course setter Lori Huberman, with results fixed electronically by E-punch master Jeff Lanam. Genuine U.C. Berkeley-level courses for both mind and body.
Thanks to our BAOC special teams and volunteers!
- Sarah Williams and Gary Kraght smoothly registered our 129 entrants.
- Jeff Lanam setup and staffed E-punch, and mentored John and Marcy Beard who covered while Jeff ran his course.
- Rex Winterbottom gave beginner clinics like a college tour guide teaching via the Socratic method, assisted by Jeffrey Goodwin, Gemma Fa-Kaji, and other unnamed heroes.
- Laurel Oak (with her O-dog) and Frank Markowitz helped with starts all day. Big thanks!
- Lori Huberman set excellent brain-stretching courses, ably assisted by:
- George and Leslie Minarik – course vetting
- Sam Coradetti – control setting, control pickup
- Presto Huberman – control setting, control pickup
- Carlo Giacometti – control pickup
- Daniel Å ebo – control pickup
- Gemma Fa-Kaji – control pickup
- John Beard – control pickup
News Flash #1: People crossed (the plane of) an "uncrossable" fence
- There has been a flurry of BayONet messages (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/baoc/conversations/messages) regarding an "uncrossable" fence near control #49 on the Advanced courses.
News Flash #2: Tariffs imposed on Berkeley (Summer Series) results
- Washington, DC, June 5, 2019: Today the Summer Series Commissioner announced a new round of tariffs imposed on the results of the Berkeley orienteering event. “The illegal crossing of open gates has to stop,†said the Commish.
- A one-person committee of big-brains studied the results of the event in detail. Using a climate-less model (attached to this communique here [PDF/124KB]), it was determined that some runners completed the two controls in question faster than an inconsiderate Twitter post. As a consequence, their time for the two legs was adjusted to the average time they should have taken based on their speed on the rest of the course (i.e., 11% of adjusted total time), with an additional 20% tariff imposed for that time for the two legs.
- In a dispassionate speech at the end of the press conference, the Commish said “The tariffs are only the beginning of our crackdown on these senseless acts. Our next step is to replace all impassable fences on all orienteering maps with big, beautiful walls.â€
- In a rare concession, the administration agreed to consider appeals based on GPS routes posted on RouteGadget. Summer Series results will be disseminated in partially redacted form once the dust has settled. [Editor's note: The Summer Series results are posted below.]
- – François (Summer Series Commissioner)

Beginner Course Short Advanced Course Long Advanced Course Summer Series Points
The preliminary results are below. Thanks to Troy Kaji, Event Director, and Lori Huberman, Course Setter, for a great event.
- One control went missing on the Beginner course, but was quickly replaced as soon as the first beginners came back.
- There was an issue on control number 49, which was enclosed on two sides by fences marked as uncrossable. However, there was an unlocked gate that some people went through. This was on both Advanced courses. One person has admitted using the gate; I'd like feedback on whether disqualification would be appropriate.
- , E-punch
Also see control-by-control timing in the WinSplits results (http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/show_event.asp?id=63270).
You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=446). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- There was a lot of discussion after the event regarding uncrossable fences and walls, and Sprint rules in general. While most of us assumed that Sprint rules applied, the event announcement did not say anything about this being a Sprint event. The course lengths actually implied a Middle-distance event. For a visiting orienteer, who had never been to Berkeley campus, this must have been confusing. (For future events, let's try to specify clearly whether or not an event is a Sprint event.) This RouteGadget event is set up using the original split times without any time adjustments.

Summer Series Points
The methodology of determining Summer Series points is explained here. In particular, note that group/team entries do not earn points, and 21-year-old male is assumed if we don't have your birth year ("M21" below). (Also keep in mind that BAOC membership is required [by the final event] for the Series cumulative awards [but not to earn points].)
See News Flash #2 above for an explanation of the indicated tariffs (and the possibility of appealing).
Some people were not included in the list below because the Commish forgot that BAOC membership is not required to earn points (i.e., it's required only to be eligible for the Series cumulative awards). Hopefully those people will have their points added in a future edition of the Series standings.
The list below was updated July 11th, and again on August 15th, to correct calculation errors and add two people. For most people, the change was small, but there were some changes to the order.
