Event Write-Up
By and
For our 10th Annual Holiday Lights event, we had 10 teams in the 60-minute division, and 38 teams in the 90-minute. (One team took their scorecard home: we would love to get your results included.) This was just about the same overall number of teams, but some of the teams were quite large this year. I often have a couple dozen maps and clue sheets left over, but not this year. I didn't get a chance to count the number of attendees this year (I was kind of busy with Beginner Clinics/Mass Start/Moving Control/Finishes/etc. :) ), but it seemed to be the largest ever. It was wonderful to see so many people, especially young people and families, turn out this year.
Peter Graube had a good crowd again this year to listen to this year's Water Play presentation.
Congratulations to Dennis Wildfogel, the winner of this year's BAOC Service Award. Thanks, Dennis, for all you have done to help the club over the years!!
Lastly, a special "Shout-out" to Pack 43 from Santa Clara and Troop 175 for coming out for a Holiday Hike. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and learned a bit about navigation in the process. I've been talking to the local BSA council about next year: who knows, we may have even more Scouts next year! If someone would like to contact the local Girl Scouts of America or any other Youth Group, it would be great to introduce them to our event/sport, if they're not already aware.
Thanks for making this event possible go to:
- Nancy Lindeman for handling all of the Event Coordination details.
- Jitka Hiscox and Stephen Harrison, my co-course setters, for all their hard work on this event. Jitka and Stephen filled in wherever was needed, especially while I was out with the moving control.
- Steve Haas for handling registration and the presentation of the BAOC Service Award.
- Bob Cooley for printing the maps.
- Chuck Spalding for help with the website.
- Marina Keeting for handling the insurance.
- Stephen Harrison, Anne Kajava, Rob Peters, Matthew Blain, and Archana Potnuru for help with results/finishes.
- Peter Graube for bringing in all the science equipment, and giving the popular Water Play presentation.
- Kathie Wiegant, Rex Winterbottom, Steve Haas, and Vicki Wolworth for help with setup/teardown, and everyone else who pitched in to help.
- The on-duty custodian who made this one of the least anxious events for the event staff. No problems with opening the room on time, having a working key to open the cafeteria tables, etc.
- We all miss long-time course-setter Tony Pinkham who originated the moving control, and continue to wish him well in his new environment. Rumor has it that he's already out scouting new neighborhoods for his local Orienteering club.
- And everyone for coming out and participating in the event.

60-Minute Class 90-Minute Class
You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=434). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- Since this is a Score-O setup with no E-punch, RouteGadget knows only the Start and Finish locations. All the control circles are included directly on the map image.
- You need to enter your name (please also add your Total Points score after your name) and total time in MMMSS format before drawing/uploading your route. For example, 89:52 is entered as 8952.
- When drawing your route, be sure to visit the Finish only after you have completed your route. That is, the blue line pointing to the Finish should follow you throughout your route. You can also upload your GPS track if you have one.
- For the animation, each competitor's speed is averaged out over the whole length of their (manually drawn) route. This works out just fine for Score-O, since competitors often end up taking very different routes.
- To learn to use RouteGadget, view the video here (http://routegadget.net/download.cgi). (Note that the video has no audio!)
The results for the 2018 Willow Glen Holiday Lights Night Score-O event are below. Note that tie scores were broken by elapsed time (i.e., if two entries have the same scores, but different times, the one with less time on the course is placed ahead of the other competitor).
My apologies if I misspelled your name (it was difficult reading some handwriting of names). If I have your name wrong, let us know and we’ll correct your listing in these results.
