We returned to Las Trampas for a "B" event for the first time in many years. Since, the last time, the vegetation has grown a bit thicker in places, a new parking lot was constructed, and permission to hold events has become even more complicated!
What hasn't changed is the steepness of the terrain, and the herds of cows and calves. What also hasn't changed is my love of the map, and the challenges it presents to course setters, event directors, and participants.
This year, the head ranger was very nervous about letting us off trail, but relented after course setter Graham Brew showed him the planned courses, and explained the staggering of participants over time and courses. The more junior rangers were gung-ho about the event, and were very helpful in making sure gates were unlocked in time, and they helped with parking and publicity.
The extensive steepness of the park resulted in our forcing even the beginner courses to start at a remote location, over a mile away from registration, and about 150 meters uphill. This made the amount of climb on the courses bearable, but really should be avoided for the White course at any venue other than Las Trampas!
Course Setter Graham Brew spent many hours at Las Trampas designing the courses, and his efforts paid off very well. Times on all the courses matched the averages for all our "B" meets, and while many participants slipped and slid in places, they finished in mostly good form, and their reviews of the courses were very positive!
A great addition to the event was the use of Western Racing Systems, aka Jay Hann, to handle all E-punch and result duties. Jay has wonderful equipment, making the task quick and easy, with everyone loving the large display board showing up-to-the-minute results on all courses. Jay and Mark Blair handled all the E-punch tasks with ease, making my job that much easier.
I want to give a big "Welcome" and "Thank you" to Sarah Williams for taking charge of East Bay Registration. She handled the large crowds with poise, helped by veteran registrar Gary Kraght. Sarah will be a great addition to the club's registration team!
Despite the remote Start, we did have a fair number of beginners, most of whom successfully navigated their course due to the excellent clinics given by Jeff Lanam throughout the morning.
With the remote Start, we needed a solid crew at that location to make sure everyone, especially the beginners, got out on their courses in good order. Graham Brew, Gary Carpenter, and Stephen Harrison did a great job, with Steve Harrison and Steve Gregg hauling the gear back down the hill when starts closed.
Lastly, I want to give a special thank-you to the pick-up and clean-up crew who cheerfully went back out into the hills to collect the control bags and stands, and take down the Finish. Steve Harrison, Michael Kelly, Jitka Hiscox, Nick Corsano, Theo Verhoeven, and Julia Doubson and two of her friends (whose names I did not get) managed to bring all the controls back by mid afternoon.
All the volunteers made my job an easy one, and together we all put on a fun and successful event.

At the end of the day, I found two articles of clothing left behind by some participants:
- Red, zippered, hooded sweatshirt with logo on front
- Long-sleeved dark-colored "Ibex" sweater
