We had fantastic weather again this year, sunny and mild with a light breeze off the bay. Scheduling was perfect, as the previous weekend was rainy. In spite of the great weather we had a relatively low turnout; not as many "new to orienteering" participants as in previous years. As one grizzled club member commented "Just the usual orienteering suspects." About 102 participants (approximately 180 last year). Did last-minute income tax filing impact our turnout?
This year, course setter Steve Gregg designed five point-to-point courses. In addition to traditional White and Yellow beginner courses, Steve set "Short", "Medium" and "Long" Orange courses for advanced runners. Due to terrain limitations at Point Pinole, the control placements on the "advanced" courses are typically considered Orange-level difficulty. Steve designed the advanced courses to test a competitor's ability to run hard between controls and navigate accurately at high speed.
Results
White Course (2.8 km, 60 m climb, 13 controls): A winning time of 40:50 was posted by Thomas Leonard. Max Kennedy took second place with a time of 48:47. Mandy Bernert & Richard Lyman finished in third place at 58:30.
Yellow Course (3.1 km, 75 m climb, 14 controls): Gemma Fa-Kaji had the fastest time of 45:06, followed by Anton Kourakin at 48:10. Third-place finisher was Jamie Maclean at 50:42.
The advanced courses were very competitive, and the winning times were fast as predicted by course setter Steve Gregg.
Short Orange Course (3.3 km, 85 m climb, 15 controls): Winner Denis Kourakin with a time of 28:23. Hope Fa-Kaji finished second at 34:51, followed by Evan Custer at 44:17.
Medium Orange Course (5.0 km, 120 m climb, 19 controls): Winner Rex Winterbottom had a time of 36:16. Dennis Wildfogel was second at 41:59. Third place went to Johanna Karras at 47:10. Great job Johanna!!
Long Orange Course (6.5 km, 145 m climb, 24 controls): Winner François Léonard in 36:09 (5.56 min/km); Matej Šebo, second at 39:00; Bill Cusworth finished third at 40:00.

Lost & Found
A white plastic garbage bag was left at the Point Pinole event, containing the following items:
- A blue T-shirt from the U.S. Champs at Morgan Territory.
- A yellow T-shirt from the 2012 "Coyote Ridge Trail Run".
- A black Suunto-branded case of some sort—perhaps meant to hold a baseplate compass (but there was nothing inside).
