Event Write-Up

Conditions were superb in mid-November at Pacheco as usual; the grass is much easier to move through than in late spring, and the weather is mild and clear. Seems like the rain always waits for the second half of November! Participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves out there, thanks to Virginia DeBons and Dennis Wilkinson for setting nice courses. For those hungering for Rogaines, they were satisfied. Dennis set a course with interesting checkpoints on very clear features, and a challenging route problem to solve to go along with the profoundly scenic vistas. Werner Haag and Mats Jansson brought some great treats, and thanks to Leslie Minarik for arranging the big spread on Sunday. Wildlife spotted included tarantulas, badgers, and tule elk, including a "unicorn" tule elk with one horn (that was spotted near the Basalt Campground.) Thanks to Nancy Lindeman for arranging a good camping setup nearby, and gathering about 25 of us for a nourishing Saturday dinner at Pea Soup Anderson's with fulfilling company.
Lots of help was provided to make it happen, although we could have used some more. I picked up slack at the Finish, and we really had a minimal crew. A big thanks to Mailé Thompson for helping all over the place with registration, finishes, putting out the Saturday Orange and advanced controls with Virginia, and helping me check some of the Sunday Rogaine locations for Dennis. I put out the White and Yellow controls Saturday morning, so thank you to Gary Carpenter for helping with early setup and getting the remote advanced Start going and streamering it. Thanks to everyone's patience with the late start for the advanced and Orange courses. Chuck Spalding and Wes Erck manned the White and Yellow starts. Mattias Kohler handled the first Finish shift. Gavin Wyatt-Mair came early and helped Steve Haas with registration on Saturday, and also helped set up the Start and Finish with Wes Erck. Dan Greene handled parking Saturday morning, and did clinics with Cornelia Coolen. The E-punch team got the job done well, especially with the excess checkpoints (69 total!) on the Sunday course and most sticks limited to 50 capacity, a big thanks to Rosemary Johnson, Jeff Lanam, and Evan Custer. The Saturday control pickup crew included Nancy Lindeman, Tapio Karras, Cornelia Coolen, Ralf Burgert, Steve Haas, Theo Verhoeven, Fyodor Konkov, and Luc Poppe. A big thanks on Sunday to Matej Sebo, Lubomir Sebo, Nick Giori, Mailé Thompson, Ralf Burgert, Peter Graube, and myself for picking up about half of the checkpoints. The other half remain out there.
Although there were only about 65 participants on Saturday and 57 on Sunday, it was so nice and people enjoyed it so much, I think it was well worth it. Head Ranger Betty Wong was great to work with and helped coordinate an EMT for Sunday for us, Ranger Destiny, who also helped out a bit. Both of them trucked us around the park for water for the Sunday course, picking up the Sunday water, and dropping off some of the control pickup crew to remote locations. Ranger Wong is interested in having us back for a Night-O! (We didn't suggest it!) I also think it would be worth mapping more of the terrain in the park, and holding another A-meet there in the future.
And a note from Dennis Wilkinson:
- "After I placed the bags I wished I had used more stands and thereby chosen less visible locations for some controls. In hindsight, with the ranger's help dropping bundles of stands/bags/units with the water, I could have managed this. When I designed and flagged the course though, I wanted to be sure I could get everything out even if I had to do two big loops from the Start, so I planned for minimal stands.
- "If you do a write-up, could you mention that about the stands? Also that it was a tough course to set, trying to juggle creating multiple route options that were not all steep, avoiding too many trails, creating at least some interesting legs and non-obvious placements, and creating enough length for 6 hours.
- "Did you end up getting things picked up? I could probably get down there if not—let me know."
I think Dennis did a great job with the plan and execution. Can we spare him another trip down there? There are still about 30 checkpoints out in the hills of Pacheco... contact if you can help.
Thanks to Devin Prouty, Luc Poppe, Tapio Karras, and Cornelia Coolen for picking up the remaining 30 checkpoints at Pacheco on Sunday, November 23. It was a nice day for it!

Sunday Results

There was a little bit of massaging necessary for the results, since we found out that the OEScore program accepted only 64 controls and Dennis had set out 69 controls. So, where you see Extra points in the line, that is manually adding the points for controls 101–105 that the runner may have gotten. Penalty points were assessed at 5 points per minute (or fraction) overtime.
You can also see control-by-control timing in this PDF file (40KB). Note these comments about the splits file:
- The program repeats the winner's name and overall results on each page for that category.
- The splits for controls 101–105 are listed at the end of each runner's line, since the program considers them as extra controls, not on course.
- The last five control splits for Matej Å ebo are listed at the very end. These couldn't be combined with the rest of his results due to the 64-control limit. Matej hit all 69 controls.
You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget. Use of RouteGadget is explained here. RouteGadget for the Day-2 Rogaine event is here (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=351). RouteGadget handles Rogaines nicely, as it has an option to use splits to determine the order in which each competitor visited the controls. In a way, each competitor makes their own course. You will see some impressive graphs by selecting several competitors. For example, try selecting all the competitors in the 6-hour category.
