Event Write-Up
By
The rain clouds parted for a day, allowing 220 people to orienteer in near-perfect conditions at Joe Grant Park.
Rory Maclean (age 15), having set the White and Yellow courses the past two years, set the Orange course this year, in addition to White and Yellow. It's great to see the younger generation mature.
Werner Haag set the advanced courses. He structured Green, Red, and Blue to start from high up the road, covering terrain rarely seen. The views of the green hills were spectacular. There were only one or two DNFs on each course, indicating that they weren't too hard or too easy. The map is showing its age: in one critical spot there was a partially downed fence on Red and Blue that some relied on as a catching feature but didn't see it, whereas others said it was there. People seemed to use all the route choices Werner had envisioned, plus several more he had not, which means there was pretty good course design. Werner's only preference would have been to have a few more legs on each course with more technical control placements and route choices, but he had to balance that with minimization of climb and the openness of the available terrain.
Many others helped during the event with the myriad tasks to be performed, including Derek Maclean, Jeff Lanam, Steve Haas, Scott Aster, Sharon Evans, Dennis Wildfogel, George Minarik, Greg Ehrensing, Jay Hann, Daniel Sebo, Matej Sebo, Lubomir Sebo, Gavin Williams, Gregory Lee, Fillan Swift, Damian Swift, Rex Winterbottom, Bill Murphy, and Terry Gleason. Especially gratifying was seeing many young people pitching in to help. It is quite amazing how jobs magically get done by people spontaneously stepping up. It makes the job of event director easy. Seeing that the orchestration of the event was going well, I was able to take time to entertain guests. One Boy Scout exclaimed "This is the best day of my life!". Though he will have many other best days, it was pleasing to hear such feedback about the event. Good reason for others to consider directing an event.
Several people also helped behind the scenes, including Bob Cooley with the maps, Rosemary Johnson with epunch, Marina Keating with insurance, and Chuck Spalding with updates to the website.
Clay and Ernest won the White course, Kim Van Berkel won Yellow, Andrew Peterson won Orange, Steve Haas won Brown, Kent Ohlund won Green, Tapio Karras won Red, and François Léonard won Blue. The full results are below.
