Event Write-Up

By

Fifty-five participants joined us for the Willow Glen Holiday Lights run and potluck—a great turnout for this night event. We enjoyed perfect weather this year—clear and crisp but not cold. The holiday lights were impressive! In addition to orienteers, many walkers and horse-drawn carriage riders were out enjoying the holiday spirit.

Six teams ran on the 60-minute course, with Steve Haas winning despite an overtime penalty. Twenty-four teams participated in the 90-minute course. Many families with children ran the course together. Although nobody captured all of the controls, Jason Reed and Matej Sebo were both in contention, with Rex Winterbottom close behind.

The potluck was enjoyed by all, with a variety of healthy and fun foods. While we ate, Peter Graube demonstrated physics concepts using water, and kept the youngsters' (and several adults') rapt attention. I learned two new concepts in just five minutes of watching. It would have been enjoyable and educational to sit longer.

Rex Winterbottom was inducted into the prestigious group of BAOC Service Award winners for his enthusiastic and diverse volunteerism for BAOC.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who made this event a success: Marina Keating for obtaining insurance, Bob Cooley for printing maps, Tony Pinkham and Brad Wetmore for setting courses very quickly after a late Thanksgiving this year, Steve Haas for running registration, Alan Glendinning for equipment, Ev and Jean Beuerman for helping with registration and scoring, Nancy Lindeman, Vicki Woolworth, and Brad Wetmore for bringing hot water makers, Bjorn Widerstrom for shopping and other help, and the San Jose Unified School District and Willow Glen Elementary School for letting us use their facilities. I apologize if I have left anyone out.

Comments on Questioned Controls

Brad checked controls 26, 51, 64, 68, and 204 with the following conclusions:

Control 26: You get credit if you chose black or white for the hat color (changed two scores).
Control 51: No changes—there is no wreath over the snowman.
Control 64: We will accept Santa Claus for one of the little snowmen that had red on it (changed one score).
Control 68: There were presents (over by the driveway) and flamingos (they were by the tree), but not any reindeer (only one score changed).
Control 204: The snowmen were not inflated, so it was difficult to count them (two scores changed).
