Event Write-up
By , Event Director
Forty-six participants came out to do the TrailCross courses at Wilder Ranch on June 11, 2013. The day was misty, which makes for good running conditions. And, fortunately, the ocean views were still spectacular! People enjoyed the abundant snacks (some even home-made!), and nice awards.
Some of the races were quite close! The full lists of finishers (and times) on the 5 km, 10 km, and 10 mi courses are below.
The event could not have been a success without the generous help from all of the following fine folks, many of them friends and family:
- Greg Favor – For setting the awesome courses! Greg successfully juggled the requirements of the Park, while offering technical challenges. That's a huge part of what makes a great meet!
- Ranger Todd Allen – Who worked with us from the beginning of the permit process to ensure that the courses were compliant with Wilder Ranch's requirements.
- Ranger Josh Stone – For being a great Ranger Monitor—accessible, communicative, and he even manned the Remote Aid Station for 2 hours, and took it down!
- Ranger Joe Connors – He took over from Todd and facilitated the final details on race day, without a hiccup.
- Senior Park Aid Ryan – For finding power and running the extension cords, and for being present and pleasant.
- Rex Winterbottom – For fielding the million questions I had along the way in organizing this event! Also, for spearheading E-Punch, and picking up some controls at day's end! And in general, thanks to Rex for all that he's doing for BAOC, providing a variety of events and infusing new energy into the Club. He wears big shoes!
- Nancy Ogle – For stepping up early, and staying committed to the end (even though her husband got the flu) to wo-man the Remote Aid Station!!! You rock!
- Anna Prang – Tirelessly helped with setup, loaned her car for us to run out and pick up supplies for the remote Start and Finish areas, and carted half the gear to the event.
- Jay Hann – For meeting me at the Fremont Storage Locker the week before, and helping out on meet day.
- Chuck Spalding – For all the website assistance (and "just doing it" for me), helping with remote starts & finishes, and the delightful email banter!
- Misha Kreslavsky – Exemplary, vital E-Punch assistance for most of the day, and then went out to retrieve the 5k controls!
- Monica Moritsch – A Wilder Ranch docent—she wo-manned the t-shirts, finishes, anywhere else she was needed. So helpful!
- Kira Ticus – Helped with setup, was a runner/gopher between reg. and the remote Start/Finish, signed the way to Starts, and was just her cheerful, helpful self the whole time. ☺
- Steve Haas – For providing a smooth registration process.
- Vladimir Gusiatnikov – For being the fabulous online registrar, and co-fabulous registration processor on race day!
- Gavin Wyatt-Mair – Another fabulous registration helper!
- Dick & Judy Opsahl – More fabulous registration helpers!
- Ev & Jean Beuerman – The return of the most fabulous registration folks of all time!
- Karen & Carmen Beltramo – Who wo-manned the Start line (for post-mass starters)
- Scott Aster – For manning the Start line (for late starters) and the final 10 km finishes, and cheerfully assisting wherever needed.
- Nick Corsano – For providing the invaluable Beginner's Clinics in the most friendly and clear manner.
- Nancy Lindeman – The most gracious greeter! And for offering ideas to promote the event.
- Matej Sebo – Control pickup—all of the 5 km course, and then went out again to grab a third of the 10 km!!
- Steve Beltramo – For snagging 2/3's of the 10 km controls on his mtn. bike, after doing the 5 km with his son, Enzo! And this was their first orienteering meet!
- Jeff Lanam – For pitching in where he was needed, including being the liaison between the rangers and the club when a boy was missing for a short period.
- Peter Graube – For charging and passing off the walkie-talkies.
- Alan Glendenning (& Meg Gerstner) – For meeting me to pass off some of the equipment.
- Trinka Gillis – For getting me started on the right foot with the permit.
- Marina Keating – For promptly providing the insurance certificate.
- Bob Cooley – For making map corrections in the 10th hour, and printed the maps.
- Rosemary Johnson – For meeting me in Coyote Hills to pass off the E-Punch equipment, and later fielded questions about the synching process.
- Kelly Wells – In the background, for reimbursing the expenses of the meet (permits, etc.).
- Wilder Ranch docents and employees – For taking care of this jewel of a park, and also being so inviting to those who use it for events, like ours.
- Dan Vannatter (my husband) – Really, he was my Co-Event Director. For standing by my side beginning 6 months ago, fielding ideas and troubleshooting situations, running to town for safety pins (for bibs) on meet morning, baking brownies, getting refreshments, helping with set-up, finishes, gopher/runner between remote start/finish and registration, helping with take-down, and for drawing me a surprise, much needed bath at the end of the day. ☺
- And to Everyone Else not named here (and there probably are a few) who I came into contact with during my coordination of this event, who offered their know-how, expertise, and encouragement. Thank you!!
You all helped in many ways, large and small, and added to the camaraderie, as well as the necessary tasks that have to happen to make an event successful. Many of you took on more tasks than you were assigned, and I may not have recognized all of you for every way in which you contributed. That just goes to show how awesome you all were, in coming together to get the job(s) done, without the need of my "supervision"!
Thank you all for bringing your good cheer, willingness to do anything, cooperation, dedication to your duties, and for just plain showing up! Greg and I couldn't have done it without you!
I look forward to see you at more events in the future!
