Event Write-Up

The annual UCB campus event was my first orienteering experience many, many years ago. This year I was the event director, working along with course setter George Minarik, orienteering champion, who was also having an anniversary, his first, with his plump and happy new heart.
The event went very smoothly due to great courses, good weather, and quiet efficient event volunteers. You know who you are, but I will try to name you, knowing ahead of time that some persons who gave a real hand may remain unlisted due to my flawed system of note-taking: Peter Graube, Steve Haas, James Wilson, Evan Custer, Marie-Josée Parayre, Olga Kraght, Vicky Woolworth, Fred Loebl, Harold DeMoss, Joseph Doetsch, Mattias Kohler, Barbara Robbins, Nancy Lindeman, Gary Kraght, Jennifer Kerr, Penny DeMoss, Greg Ehrensing, Jim Fish, Rex Winterbottom, François Léonard.

Notes:
- After some post-event discussion, it was decided that Second Course results will not be listed separately. Thus, there is one list for each course below. This admittedly differs from the normal club procedure, but it is considered to be justified for these reasons:
- The courses were purposely set on different parts of the map to avoid any "knowledge benefit" from the first course run.
- Competitors were encouraged to come ready to run both courses.
- It's just more fun to be able to easily compare your times with everyone else.
- Although there is an advantage of getting used to the map and terrain when running a previous course, that advantage is no more than that of the people who attended a training event on this map last summer. No more advantage than people who attend or have attended school here. No more advantage than those club members who have orienteered on this campus for the past 25 or so years.
- It could be argued that running a first course causes a disadvantage for the second course because of being tired.
- The people who ran each course as a Second Course are noted in the results "for the record". You're welcome to make of it what you want.
- I want to apologize to the people who had trouble with control #10 on the Sprint course. It was correctly placed on the map. But the map did not do a good enough job of conveying the fact that the control was on the second level. I tried to mitigate this by adding the upper wall symbol to the control descriptions, but it was still confusing to many people. Added to that, there were eight wall corners within the control circle, if you count both upper and lower walls. So a control should not have been placed in this area. Four people who did not find the control were given credit for it.
- On both courses the multi-story controls caused problems. On one hand, it seems so cool to use these levels. But on the other hand, current orienteering map symbols, no matter how precise, give a less than accurate view of this two-story situation. I think it would be good to map second levels with a slightly different shade of brown, but that is an IOF decision not ours.
