We had beautiful warm spring weather for our Pt. Pinole event this year. The event was originally scheduled for March 31, then changed to April 21 when we realized the conflict with Easter Sunday. The later schedule, coupled with a drier than normal winter, resulted in unusually dry running conditions for this venue; I believe it was possible to run all the courses without getting wet feet!
We had a total of 125 registered participants; 49 on the Thomass course and the remainder on the standard White, Yellow, and Orange courses.
The highlight of the day was the Thomass event. This was a mass-start race with everyone running the same course. However, to level the playing field, the course was designed with a 10-control Score-O “box” in the middle. The number of controls required in the score box varied from 2 to all 10 depending on age and gender. This year the course appeared to favor the M40 class (requiring 8 controls in the box), with the top three places going to M40 runners François Léonard, Aoife O'Brien, and Bill Cusworth. Tapio Karras (M50) finished in fourth place, followed by Mikkel Conradi (M21), Penny DeMoss (W60), Rex Winterbottom (M21), Matej Sebo (M20), Greg Khanlarov (M21), and Christine Brew (W40).
The top three on the White course were Denie Her, Jamie Maclean, and David Sundin. The “Lost Boys” exceeded their expectations and won the Yellow course, followed by Daniel Sebo and Kozinda. The team of Paul Hemmings and Joe Knapp took first place on the Orange course, with James Wilson in second and Juho Rissanen third.
Volunteers
The e-punch crew of Rosemary Johnson, Jeff Lanam, and Trinka Gillis used two e-punch computers to accommodate the Thomass format in addition to the standard W, Y, and O courses. This worked well and avoided the potential for problems that have been experienced recently using the GeBe system.

I haven’t been active in the club for several years, and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to recruit volunteers. I count a total of 25 volunteers, not including the course setter and event director. This was 20% of the registrants! Thank you so much; the meet ran very smoothly because of your efforts.
Lost & Found
A duffel bag with 1998 Nike Masters Games logo was left at registration table today. Email or call to arrange return.
This morning (April 28) Gian-Andrin found out that he must have lost his thumb compass at Point Pinole. It is a SUUNTO compass with a simple plate. He thinks he left it on one of the picnic tables. Did anyone pick it up? He would be glad to have it again, since he just recently purchased it from Joe Scarborough with his own pocket money. Thanks!
