Event Write-Up
By
Another great day at the Presidio National Park. We had over three hundred participants (a record). We had many young orienteers, including school, scout, and JROTC groups. Several families with tots in strollers also enjoyed the courses. Of course, the usual suspects — our core orienteers — were there as well.
The Presidio orienteering event is held on National Orienteering Day to encourage newcomers to try this thinking-person's sport. It is designed as a classic orienteering event that encourages new individuals, families, and groups. It also has long courses that appeal to runners. Thanks to Nancy Lindeman and Ben Legg for the finish-line goodies, and to Nancy for all the publicity that resulted in the record turnout.
The course setter, Chuck Spalding, was very creative in designing the courses to avoid all the construction areas, and also used many control sites that were new to the courses. Bob Cooley (mapper) and Chuck walked the Presidio before the event to get the map up to date. While doing that they found some of the new control areas that were used.
Unfortunately, there were some errors on the maps for the Orange and Long Orange courses, and in a control description for the latter. The worst error was the control circle for Long Orange #4 was centered several meters SW of the correct point. The control circle for Orange #4 and Long Orange #9 obscured a key route choice to the next control. The control description for Long Orange #7 should have referred to the upper part of the reentrant instead of the lower part. That error was noted at the Start — hopefully everyone saw it. The course setter apologizes for those errors.
Other then the above, everything worked well, and participants and volunteers said they had a good time. Thanks to the Presidio Trust for helping with the permit arrangements.

DNF = Did not finish (missed one or more controls)
DSQ = Disqualified (some controls were recorded with two, three, or more punches in the square — in two cases, it's impossible to discern the correct pattern)
MSP = Mispunched (one or more controls wrong)
Note Regarding Entering RouteGadget Data
Since there was no e-punch, the event is set up using the "no results" mode, where competitors need to enter their name, total time, and any cumulative splits that they might have taken. You can draw your route even if you didn't take any splits, just enter your name and total time. Note that if you are uploading a GPS track, you don't need to enter your total time or splits.
Note that RouteGadget requires cumulative splits. Both splits and total time need to be in MMMSS format. For example, 0:57 is entered as "57", 5:43 as "543", and 1:12:32 as "7232". That's easy.
