Event Write-Up

Every year we have a special event at Indian Valley. Sometimes it is special for the interesting diversions the college throws at us, such as swim meets or campus construction. But this year, Indian Valley was special in a very sweet way. This was the event that George Minarik returned to orienteering, completing the White course with his wife Leslie in 5th place. For those who haven't followed the Minarik saga, George had a heart transplant two months ago, following a massive heart attack several months earlier. We wish you all the best, George, and look forward to seeing you, and being inspired by you, at many future orienteering events.
It was a beautiful day, not too hot or cold, and the campus was unusually quiet. Perfect for orienteering, except that the hills were still steep! Pierce Glassner won the White course, with a three-second lead over his brother Joey Glassner. Julia Doubson, fresh from her outstanding performance at the U.S. Interscholastic Orienteering Championships, won the Yellow course by over ten minutes. The Orange course had many speedsters running it as a second course (the Brown course was apparently not long enough and not hilly enough). But of the Orange regulars, Ralf Burgert won in under an hour, with Marie-Josée Parayre in second. Marie-Josée’s husband, François Léonard, tore up the Brown course, with a minute lead over Mikkel Conradi. They both ran under 10 minutes a kilometer on a course with 8 percent climb!
It was such a pleasure to put on Indian Valley this year, because of the many great volunteers. Heidi Whalen set the courses, as she has in past years, and produced her best set of courses yet. Scott Aster and Neil Peterson handled registration. Rosemary Johnson and Rex Winterbottom were the e-punch personnel. We had a whole group of people helping with control pickup, including Mark Blair, Graham Brew, Christine Brew, Greg Ehrensing, Carol Schick-Lyda, François Léonard, Mikkel Conradi. Bob Cooley not only printed the maps, but made several iterations of map corrections. Olga Kraght helped immeasurably with setup and takedown, as did others. So many were willing to lend a hand whenever needed, and I thank all of you.
