Bear Valley
The Bear Valley ski-O events (Days 1 and 2 of the Sierra Avalanche Ski-O Championships) were a huge success this weekend!
Day 1
- We had nearly 60 people and over 60 entries (a number of people did two or three courses). A very successful event has at least 40 people.
- Course setters Julie Raymond and Neil Hunt outdid themselves by including 3–4 km of snowmobiled secondary trails that included a huge maze in the woods. Many thanks to BVCC manager, Paul Peterson, for offering his snowmobile services, and to Julie, who rode in back with a GPS (the GPS tracks were added to the maps).
- Greg Walker (2009 champion) finished the 14-km Blue course in 60 minutes (perfect length), with Donata Ereminas (2010 champion) finishing second after breaking one of his skis on the course.
Day 2
- We had 40 people despite storm conditions (we typically get 20–25 when there is a storm)
- Donatas Ereminas finished first in 59 minutes (another perfect length), with Greg Walker in second. Donatas had a great time skating despite having to go through 8 inches of powder for an hour — conditions that everybody else found to be extremely difficult. This championship appears to be another rematch of their very friendly rivalry that has gone on for the last couple of years.
- Course setter Damian Swift is to be complmented on his debut course setting for this championships. Nicely designed courses.
General Comments
Bear Valley Cross Country management was quite happy with the $1400 earned in trail-pass fees. Many thanks go to their manager, Paul Peterson, for making it so easy to run this event, providing snowmobile services to make our special trails, and for even offering two places for our volunteers and competitors to stay during the event.
We had lots of juniors at these events. On the White course, we had Ian Swift (6 years), Noah Shaeffer (6 years), Johanna Karras (11 years), Adam Graves (12 years), Johnny Kaye (13 years), and Colin Thrower (13 years). Kristina Sinks (14 years) and Mark Sinks (16 years) completed the Green courses. There were possibly more juniors on Day 2.
Tahoe XC – Day 6
Here's your chance to see what ski-orienteering is like, especially from Alison Crocker's (the star U.S. competitor at the 2011 Ski WOC in Sweden) eyes as she skied the Blue course at Tahoe Cross Country (also known by foot orienteers as Burton Creek). (The video shows the first 43 minutes of Ali's 55:46 course.) You can view a map of her course from the RouteGadget entry (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=250&kieli=) for that event. (Thanks to Cristina Luis for posting this head-cam video [and other videos] on vimeo (http://vimeo.com/19617634).)
You'll note that, unlike ski-O events of years past, we now have quite a maze of secondary snowmobile trails to navigate through the woods, and competitors often venture off-trail for their best routing options. As we develop our maps and courses in ways that are up to international standards, navigation is becoming just as critical as with foot-O, but the speeds are often faster, especially for the fully competitive skiers.
You'll also note that she is constantly navigating while skiing. This is a great video showing how you can do that while on the run/ski.
We hope you enjoy the video, and come join us next year for the Sierra World Cup events.
- Warning: This video will make you want to go ski orienteering!
[Editorial Note: At the Ski World Orienteering Championships in Sweden in March 2011, Ali finished in 18th place on the sprint and middle-distance courses, 12th with Greg Walker on the relay, and 8th place on the long course. See more information about the Americans at the Ski WOC here.]
Looking Forward
In case you've missed it, BAOC has been asked to host one of four 2012 Ski-O World Cup events at our ski-O events next year. Our plan is to host this with the U.S. Ski-O Team at Tahoe Donner XC, Tahoe XC, and Auburn Ski Club. Additionally, we are trying to host the U.S. Ski-O Champs at Bear Valley at the beginning of the week. If you can help, we'd love to hear from you. More on this later.

Post-championship changes to the scoring include the following:
- Dan Greene moved from 4th to 2nd place in M55+, because his absences were not previously indicated.
- Wendell Doman was removed from the M55+ class, because he was mistakenly assigned to that class on Day 1.
- Bob Baylor moved from 4th to 1st in M40+ when his two absences were recognized.
- Kent Ohlund moved to 2nd in M40+ for the same reason.
- Unfortunately for Paul Carson and Doug Berling, they moved down in the placings (sorry Paul and Doug).
My apologies for these late changes. The spreadsheet that I use requires that we specify the absences, and that sometimes gets omitted. With help from Kathleen Kerns, we are developing a database program that will automatically assign absences when we use this scoring system next time. If we do get the 2012 Ski-O World Cup event, we will just use the SPORTident scoring system for individual events, but when we return to our normal 7-day format we'll resume the Sierra scoring system with improvements that should simplify the checks in the future.
