Event Write-Up

A misty morning added to the challenge of a contour-only (LIDAR) map; only one of the interesting choices for orienteering at Shell Ridge this January. In addition to being COOL meet #6 with beginning and intermediate courses, orienteers were treated to Radio-O, the contour-only course, and an intermediate contour training offered by Ben Legg.
The LIDAR map, more detailed than our standard map (60-cm contours instead of 5 m) was a collaboration (conspiracy?) between Jay Hann and Bob Cooley. Most folks were skeptical — "looks too hard" was an initial reaction — but after adjusting to it, most found it easier than usual because of the accuracy of the contours. 27 runners tried this course out, with James Scarborough completing it in less than 25 minutes, edging out Dennis Wilkinson.
The COOL league was represented on all the courses, with the Varsity Boys taking on the contour-only course, Matej Sebo coming in first. JV Girls team Terra and Heather edged out their competition, with William Morris earning the JV Boys top spot. Natalie Kim and Daniel Kim won their respective Middle School slots; and Sanar Samhouri and Gavin Smith were the Elementary School champs.
Ten people had the opportunity to try their hand at Radio-O.
Thanks go to Jay Hann for setting courses and generally doing almost all the event director stuff, except a few last-minute things. Bob Cooley was also a major contributor, not only helping create and print the maps, but also setting up and instructing folks in Radio-O. Thanks to Ben Legg for organizing and holding an intermediate clinic. Epunch was handled by Mark Blair, Jim Fish, and Greg Ehrensing. Registration was again managed single-handedly by James Wilson, with Dan Greene offering beginners’ clinics. Jim Fish also helped with setup, control pick-up, and cleanup. Control pick-up was coordinated by Harold and Penny DeMoss, who were assisted by George Minarik, Steve Gregg, and Kelly Wells. Also putting the rest of the stuff away at the end of the day were Tapio Karras and Greg Ehrensing. Apologies to anyone I missed in the usual hustle and bustle.
Thanks are due to Rangers Dan Bylin and Art Janke, as well as United Site Services for getting the necessary item in the right place.
