Event Write-Up
By
Another great day at the Presidio National Park. We had over 280 participants, including visitors from other counties. We had many young orienteers, including school, scout, and JROTC groups. Of course the usual suspects — our core orienteers — were present. The Presidio orienteering event is held on National Orienteering Day to encourage newcomers to try this thinking-persons sport. Thanks to Nancy Lindeman for the finish-line goodies and publicity. The free samples of HappySqueeze available in the refreshment area were courtesy of Susan Olsen and Happy Family Brands.
Even up to the day of the event, it was unclear if all the control venues would remain intact because of the Doyle Drive project construction. The Start and Finish venues were moved to the Log Cabin area to avoid Fort Scott construction depots. All worked out okay. The course setter, Chuck Spalding, was very creative in designing the courses to avoid all the construction areas, and also used many control sites that were new to the courses. Chuck’s comments on the courses after the event were as follows:
- Everyone successfully completed the White course this year!
- The White, Yellow, and Orange courses might have been slightly too long (although everyone completed their course within 3 hours).
- The Long Orange course seems to have been about the right length.
- The Orange course was perhaps too difficult (e.g., too much climb?), considering the number of DNFs on that course. Also, there was some "discussion" about the map's location of control #1 on that course.
- Control #5 on the Orange courses should not have been placed so close to the unfenced edge of the golf course — or the map should have clearly shown the perimeter cart path as being out of bounds. Several people ended up walking on the cart path (with some unpleasant repercussions).
- A few(?) people had some difficulty finding that control because the downed tree was not clearly visible along its entire length.
- Several people lost their punch cards. Is that normal?
(This was Chuck's first time at course setting, and welcomes feedback about things that could have been better — as well as specific things that were considered good ☺.)
Other than Chuck's comments above, everything worked well, and participants and volunteers said that they had a good time. Thanks to the Presidio Trust for helping with the permit arrangements.
Thanks to the following volunteers for making the Presidio day run well. Without them the day would not have happened.

Entering your route in RouteGadget:
Since there was no e-punch, the event is set up using the "no results" mode, where participants need to enter their name, total time, and any cumulative splits that they might have taken. Note that if you are uploading a GPS track, you don't need to enter your total time or splits.
You can draw your route even if you didn't take any splits — just enter your name and total time. Note that RouteGadget requires cumulative splits. Both splits and total time need to be in MMMSS format. For example, 0:57 is entered as "57", 5min43s as "543", and 1hr12min32s as "7232". That's easy.
