Event Write-Up
By
The long-delayed Calero event and BAOC 2010 2011 Club Championships finally took place! (Last year's event, which was to be the 2010 Club Championships, had to be canceled because of access issues caused by rain.)
Sunday September 25th was a beautiful day, not too hot and not too cold, with a bit of rain in the afternoon. (We were lucky it was just a little rain! If it had rained any harder, we wouldn’t have been allowed to use the car for control pickup.)
Simultaneous with the regular B-meet, Jay Hann held a Junior Training Camp that was attended by more than 50 juniors and parents. He took them through a variety of exercises — creating their own map, reading a map, running three courses of increasing difficulty, following a map with nothing but contours on it, and more. The students were enthusiastic about the exercises, and they were kept busy! He even provided a hot dog and burrito lunch for the whole training group and shared the leftovers with the B-meet participants. This was a huge undertaking on Jay’s part, with an impressive result.
Ben Legg, the club Social Director, provided a great selection of snacks to encourage runners to stick around for the awards ceremony. The awards were BAOC T-shirts, with a choice of toys for children or others who didn’t want a T-shirt. If you are a first-, second-, or third-place winner in a Club Championship category and didn’t get a T-shirt, please contact me at to claim your prize. (Most of the T-shirts remaining are the Pacheco event shirts.)
Because of the large number of Training Camp participants, all starting courses at the same time, the EPunch table became quite crowded at times. If you are a club member and you notice that your name doesn’t appear in the BAOC Club Championship section of the results, please let me know so I can fix it.
Some items were left or found at the event: two water bottles, a 3-legged stool, a compass, a small wad of cash. If these are yours, please describe them in an email to me at .
We had a fantastic group of volunteers who helped make this event a success. Toby Ferguson and Mark Rice set the courses under the mentoring eye of Tapio Karras. Bjorn Widerstrom was my right-hand man, and all four of these people worked Saturday putting out controls, and all day Sunday at the Start and a variety of other tasks. Prerunners were Bud Laird, Shura Krechetov, Cornelia Coolen, Pierre Delforge, and Jane Delforge. Peter Graube and Marsha Jacobs helped Steve Haas at registration deal with the hordes of Training Camp participants. Werner Haag taught beginner’s clinics, and Dan Greene taught an intermediate clinic. Rosemary Johnson, Jeff Lanam, Mark Blair, Wes Erck, and Greg Ehrensing all worked EPunch. Wes Erck distributed awards. Theo Verhoeven, Werner Haag, Bjorn Widerstrom, Alex Finch, and Cedric LasFargues all picked up controls.
Thanks to all the participants and volunteers for making the day so successful!
Trail-O Training Write-Up
Thank you to everyone who tried the Trail-O training at Calero! I hope you enjoy doing the puzzles as much as I enjoy setting them. I had originally planned four controls, but the grasses were higher this year, and the features required to solve the fourth puzzle were not visible.
Here are links for the directions (PDF/55KB), the map (PDF/150KB) that was handed out, and the solutions (PDF/60KB).
Thanks,
Alex Finch
