Event Write-Up

Goats, goats, goats! The goats that graze at Point Pinole all winter have always been out of the park by mid-February before, so I felt safe scheduling the event in early March this year. Unfortunately, this year the goats did not even arrive at the park until January, and so were still around in full force on the day of the event.
The park ranger has no idea where the goats will be from day to day, and the goat keeper speaks no English. So all I can do is place the controls in the correct location the day before the event, and then hope for the best. Fortunately, I believe that only Penny DeMoss, who ran the Orange course early as a pre-runner, had any contact with the goats, as she reported having to run through a small herd to punch one control. This control was free of goats at 8 AM, surrounded by goats for Penny’s run around 10 AM, but the goats apparently were moved elsewhere shortly after that, as I heard no more reports of any goats on any course for the rest of the day. Saved again! I probably should schedule this event even later in the year in 2011, though, to prevent any future goat issues.
There was a substantial amount of rainfall leading up to the event, but the week before the event was mostly dry, and as a result the terrain was not as sloppy as I had feared. The large amounts of standing water still on the ground did slow times, though. As is becoming the norm at this event, Francois Leonard won both the Prologue and Chase courses handily again, but could only manage a time of 13:20 for the 2.7 km Prologue, as opposed to his time of 12:47 for the 2.9 km course last year. The Chase course ran slower than usual by a similar amount. Behind Francois, Pierre Delforge put together two strong runs to finish second, and newcomer Rebecca Minty from Australia managed to beat out Vladimir Gusiatnikov for third place overall.
I was surprised by the relatively light turnout for the Prologue and Chase courses, and the relatively large turnout for the regular Orange course. In fact, I ran out of Orange maps near the end of the start window, and had to scrounge around for extra maps to accommodate the last couple of Orange starters. Does that mean people are growing tired of the Prologue/Chase format? Do people want to run longer courses on this map again? (The Orange course was 3.4 km this year — longer than usual). If anyone has ideas for a fresh or different way to use this map in the future, please let me know, and I’ll consider a change of format for 2011.
The list of helpers to thank for this event starts with George Minarik and Dennis Wildfogel, who volunteered to vet the courses before the event, and who made several important suggestions for improvement. As usual, Bob Cooley printed all the maps beautifully. Other people who helped out in some capacity either during or after the event were Nancy Lindeman, Jim Fish, Scott Novotny, Evan Custer, Pierre Delforge, Rebecca Minty, Vicki Woolworth, Ruth Kadel, Harold and Penny DeMoss, Greg Ehrensing, James Wilson, Judy Koehler, Rosemary Johnson, Toby Ferguson, and Mark Blair. My apologies to anyone else who stepped in to help and whom I have forgotten about.
Lost and Found
Some items are from previous meets. Let know if you know anything about any of these:
- One Ecco running shoe (left foot), looks about size 12, gray with black and red
- A grey-green stocking cap, brand "Empyre"
- Red nalgene water bottle, 16 oz, "Life is Good"
- A cute, pink polka dot Hello Kitty water bottle
- Gray wool(?) mittens with blue Brooks logo
- North Face beverage holder
- Baseplate compass with a BAOC whistle tied to it
I might take the stuff to Knowland Park on March 21 to hand off to Nancy, but then again I might just throw it away. So if any of this belongs to you, or if you know who it belongs to, let know ASAP.
