Event Write-Up
By
About 100 people enjoyed our annual orienteering event at Indian Valley College and surrounding hills. BAOC has been organizing events at Indian Valley for over 15 years, and I believe this is the lowest attendance ever at an Indian Valley event, and one of the least attended BAOC events with standard courses in many years. Contrast this with Sunol, which had over 300 attendees just a couple of weeks earlier. Nonetheless, for those stalwarts who came, the courses were delightful and spring wildflowers were still out to greet us. Many people ran two courses, and the comments from finishers afterward were superlative. A bouquet of Indian Valley wildflowers goes to Heidi Whalen, the course setter.
The White and Yellow courses were won by Angela Hunter and Daniel Kim, respectively, with Daniel having a 10-second lead over Sofi Chavez. Fastest time on the Orange course was posted by Tobias Tornqvist, and Francois Leonard blazed through the Brown course in 31 minutes. Marie-Jose Parayre and Penny DeMoss were the top women on Orange and Brown, respectively.
Events need volunteers! Heidi Whalen set courses, assisted by Scott Aster, who also handled Registration duties. Judy Koehler conducted Beginners Clinics. Jay Hann spent all day at the e-punch results table, and did not even get out on a course. Map corrections and map production was handled by Bob Cooley. Olga Seredenko helped with equipment setup and takedown. And all controls and water were picked up by Jim Fish, Misha Lipatov, Luc Poppe, Vicki Woolworth, Steve Haas, and Greg Ehrensing. Thank you, everyone!
