Event Write-Up
By Judy Koehler
With two scout troops and classes from Montgomery High School and Sacramento State attending the 2009 Spring Lake National Orienteering Day event, the theme once again was all about youth. Young people of all ages walked, biked, and carpooled to take in Scott Aster's intriguing courses. With support from local newspapers such as the Bohemian and the Sonoma Index Tribune, most attendees were new to the sport.
Questions and curiosity about orienteering required four experienced orienteers to rotate throughout the day giving instruction. When asked what is the first thing he should do, one of the students responded "find the canoes" as he saw the connecting line between two of this first controls points crossed the lake.
Chris Robles and Thor Bodtrer of Petaluma conquered the White course in 33:15 minutes, and then went out on the Yellow course. Chris Berg of Santa Rosa was first on the Yellow course with a time of 25:23. Rex Winterbottom easily handled the Oaks Sprint in 14:14, and then did the same to the Yellow course. He had so much time left he ably handled the majority of the clinics. Unique to this event was Scott's recreation of the USTT (U.S. Team Trials) Men's Sprint course from last May. Anyone was free to time themselves on the course run by the elite M-21+ orienteeers.
With only a handful of club members attending, I was grateful for those living in the area who volunteered their time to help. Many thanks go to Rick Budde (set-up), Marsha Jacobs (set-up, early clinics), Mark and Mel Conrad (set-up, early starts), Martin Taylor (set-up, early finish), Gary Kraght (registration), Rex Winterbottom (clinics, results), Greg Logan (starts), Jim Hayes (starts), Vicki Woolworth (finish), Shura Kretchetov (finish), Neil Peterson (late registration), Joan Roos (late clinics, results), Jim Fish (late finish, results), Brett & Erik Carver (late finish), and Greg Ehrensing (late finish, control pick-up). Greg also had the daunting job of gathering and ferrying equipment between Saturday and Sunday events. Also thanks go to Bob Cooley for maps, Harold and Penny DeMoss for the loan of their tents, Jill Meuchel from Sonoma County Regional Parks, and USOF (U.S. Orienteering Federation) for the box of "goodies" for celebrating National Orienteering Day.
