Championship Results
The semi-final results for the 2009 Sierra Avalanche Ski-Orienteering Championships are below for participants to review. If you see anything to change (such as a calculation, or the application of a volunteer or absence credit), let know. I tried to apply the credits where they best helped each participant in the scoring.
Scoring is performance based and calculated as follows:
- The scoring for a Score-O event (day 1) is calculated as your control points divided by the winner's control points, with the last point being a ratio of the winner's time divided by your time (i.e., tie breaker based on time). The total is multiplied by 100. The winner of each class gets 100 points and everyone else gets a percentage of 100.
- The scoring for point-to-point events (days 2 through 5) is calculated as the winner's time divided by your time, times 100. The winner of each class gets 100 points and everyone else gets a percentage of 100.
- You are allowed up to five scores. If you do not compete all five days, you are also allowed up to one absence or volunteer credit for each day that you compete (you cannot have more credit scores than competitive scores). A volunteer credit is given for a day that you work at the event without competing, and it is equal to your highest competition score for the first volunteered day and your second highest score for your second volunteered day. An absence credit is given for a day that you do not attend the event as a competitor or volunteer, and is equal to an average of your competition and volunteer scores times 90 percent. It pays to attend!
- Where ties exist in the final score, we first try to break them by awarding 0.01 points to the better skier for the last common event (or 0.02 and 0.01 for the better skiers in a three-way tie). If the tied scores are for events not skied in common, we add the trivial difference for the better performance at the later event (often this is for two or three skiers who get 100 points on separate days without competing against one another). It pays to ski the last event if you tie someone!
- Awards are given only to people who complete at least one course for their class. Medals are given for fully competitive gender/age classes, and ribbons are given for open classes.

Notes:
A = Absence credit for a day not competing. V = Volunteer credit for a day of volunteering at the event instead of competing. * = Rounding error--typically less than 0.01 point. Original calculations are not restricted to two decimal places. ** = Tie breaker. Where ties exist, we first check to see how the tied skiers compared to one another in the same race. If the tied skiers did not race against one another (or remain tied if they did race against each other), we then give a slight advantage of 0.01 point to the skier with the later high score (it pays to ski the last event!!!).
