Near-perfect weather, no vandalizing of controls, and no goats on the course—it doesn’t get any better than that! All the problems that this event has had to deal with in the past were thankfully avoided this year, and the result was a wonderful day of orienteering. Although I did get lucky with the goats again this year. The good thing about the goats that graze in the park all winter is that they keep the grass short, which both reduces elephant tracks and also makes the terrain blazing fast. The bad thing about the goats is that not even the head park ranger knows exactly where they will be in the park from day to day. This year the herd was at the north end of the park, near the pier, 5 days before the event, in a field near the staging area the day before the event, and on the event day itself, those runners who arrived at the park early got to see all the goats being loaded into trucks, for transport to some other park.
There was a substantial amount of rainfall a week before the event, but due to the major drought in January, that water quickly disappeared, and by the day of the event, only a few patches of standing water were still evident in the low-lying areas. So between that and the goats, the terrain was just about as fast as it ever gets. And like last year, no one could touch the sheer speed of Francois Leonard. He blazed through the 2.9-km Prologue course in a time of 12 minutes 47 seconds, which is a pace of 4.4 minutes per kilometer. Not even U.S. Team member Wyatt Riley could come close to that performance, as Wyatt, visiting from the East Coast, could only manage a time of 14 minutes 2 seconds to finish second. Mikkel Conradi also ran strongly to finish the Prologue in third place, in a time of 14 minutes 58 seconds.
Just for fun, the Chase was done in reverse order this year, with the slowest runners starting first. I like this format since, in theory, every runner in the field has a chance to cross the finish line first. Some people disapprove of this format because of the pack running and following that occurs, but if you look at the results, there is very little difference between the time order of finish in the Prologue and the Chase, particularly among the top 15 runners. In particular, Francois, Wyatt, and Mikkel still ran the top three Chase times by a convincing amount, and 12 of the top 15 runners had Prologue and Chase placements that were at most one position different.
The actual "winners" of the event were the first three people to cross the finish line. They were Ana Herreros, Mark Blair, and Cameron Ferguson. Ana, in particular, finished so far in front of the rest of the pack (over three minutes), that we did not even recognize her as the winner at first! My apologies to Andy Belk, who we originally thought was the third place finisher, but was actually fourth.
I had a lot of volunteer help at this event. My particular thanks to the epunch crew led by Toby Ferguson and Jeff Lanam, who not only had to deal with the Prologue and Chase, but also the COOL championships that were running simultaneously.
