Memorial Weekend Sunday was a very pleasant day at Indian Valley College, not too hot and not too cold. The wildflowers were still out and the hills still green. So what could go wrong?
Some BAOCers may remember the giant swim meet two years ago, when we were blasted with amped up sound waves and inundated with wet bodies looking for a patch of sun to dry in. Then last year, there was the motorcycle training course helpfully set along the way to the first White control. The college had to work hard and creatively this year to top these memories. But the college was indeed successful. This year, a third of the campus was closed off for construction less than a week prior to the event. No worries. Fortunately, none of the actual control locations was in the construction zone. So a route was flagged around the construction area, and I spent Saturday evening hand-drawing the route and out-of-bounds area on 200 maps.
Despite the last-minute map changes and the large climb on the advanced courses, there were some very fast times. White was won by Julia Doubson, at a 7-minute/km pace. First on Yellow was Anne-Mari Koivikko in 36 minutes, with Rex Winterbottom turning in a 20-minute run as a second course. Orange was bested by Ingert Svard, with Jonas Kjall having the fastest second-course time. And Jonas also won the Brown course in 32 minutes, a sub-nine-minute/km pace over steep terrain. Note that three of the four courses were won by women. A sign of the future, perhaps?
Many people helped to put on a fun, successful event. Heidi Whalen set the courses and also helped at the Finish. Scott Aster was jack-of-all-trades, vetting and making course suggestions, supplying food, and doing registration. Bob Cooley produced our usual high-quality maps. Day-of-event volunteers included Mark Blair, Greg Ehrensing, Lena Eydelberg, Jim Fish, Anne Gorby, Rosemary Johnson, Judy Koehler, Shura Kretchetov, Benjamin Legg, Andrejus Masalkovas, George Minarik, Deron van Hoff, and Gavin Wyatt-Mair. Thank you to everyone!
