Event Write-Up

The beautiful clear sunny day after a series of big storms really brought out the crowds to the first BAOC event of the new calendar year. We had exactly 200 entries, and since many of these were groups on the beginner's courses, there were probably over 300 participants. It certainly was one of the larger BAOC events.
That was the good news. The bad news was that we ran out of maps for the Yellow, Orange, Long Orange, and Brown courses. Fortunately, I had heard several scout groups were coming, so I had Bob print 50 White maps, and we ended up with about 4 extras. However, because the White was relatively short, many people opted to do a second course, and there was a big demand for the Yellow and Orange courses. Even though I had twice as many maps as we had entrants from last year, we still ran out. Luckily, we were able to recycle some maps, so only a few people had to go out on a different course than they intended. I had carefully transferred the Condes and OCAD files to the club computer so I could print up extra maps, but I did not try it out at home before the event, and unfortunately, I needed a later version of Condes to open the file than was on the club computer, so plan B failed.
Aside from that, it was a great event. Martin Kunz had designed some interesting and challenging advanced courses with the emphasis on route choice. This involved using some new terrain in the northwest part of the map. I must admit I was a little skeptical at first using that steep terrain with all the green, and figured there would be too much trail running. Martin, however, kept emphasizing that route choice is a very important aspect of orienteering, and is not utilized as much as it should be at our local events. He was right, and most people really seemed to enjoy the challenge. Martin has written a review of his route choices, which explains his thoughts of the optimal routes on some of the long legs. RouteGadget (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=116&kieli=) also demonstrates that people took multiple different routes on the long legs.
The event ran smoothly, even though we had two remote Starts and a remote Finish. I tried to decrease the volunteers required for the event by having a self-service advanced Start and a self-service Finish. This seemed to work well, mainly because of Penny's excellent signage. The registration, manned Start and EP crews were kept busy, however, because of the big turnout. We initiated a "self-service" computer entry system for members who have their own e-sticks and are in the archive. Since it was the first time we used it, there were a few glitches. The biggest problem is that the software does not smoothly handle entries from multiple computers if you are using start numbers, since it does not have a means of synchronizing the two computers for using start numbers. As a consequence, we had quite a few error messages to the effect that a start number had already been assigned. The quick and dirty way is to eliminate using start numbers until a better workaround can be found.
Ben Legg handily won the 6.5 km, 350 m climb Blue course with a time of 69:49. Ben is a graduate student at UC Berkeley, and I guess his training runs in Tilden paid off. Steve Gregg had a good run and a relatively easy time beating second-place finisher Tapio Karras by 10 minutes on the 5.1 km, 240 m climb Red course. Steve's time was 61:24.
Edo Green finished on top in the 4.3 km, 275 m climb Green course, also in a time of 61 minutes. Stephanie Maclean was first woman on Green with a time of 1:22:45, in 12th place overall out of 30 starters. The Brown course was the most popular advanced course, with 36 starters. Brett Carter led the pack with a time of 32:16 for the 3.0 km, 125 m climb course. Lauren Knight was first woman with a time of 50:04, 10th overall.
Lou Lederer was first in the Long Orange course, with a time of 1:11:31 for the 4.9 km, 280 m course. Max Lippe whipped around the 2.7 km Orange course in a speedy 25:44, with Marie-Josee Parayre in second place just 5 minutes later.
Daniel Kopisch led the hoard of Yellow runners around the 2.0 km course in 19:05. Michelle Pelayo was first female, second overall, with a good time of 23:59. Gavin Williams sped around the 1.4 km White course in 10:56. In fact, we just barely got the Finish chute up before Gavin came charging in. Joanna Karras was first female, third overall, with a time of 11:59. Good running, kids!

Because this event’s courses emphasized route choice, please enter your routes on the RouteGadget (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=116&kieli=). Then people will be able to compare the times for different routes.
If you ran the Long Orange, Green, Red, or Blue course, be sure to read the Course Setter's Comments. (Thank you, Martin!)
