The weather was great this year for the event. There was the memorable Goat 8 years ago at this same venue, when temperatures soared over the 100-degree mark. May 4, 2008 was comfortable, with temperatures in the 70's.
The day started early with a 9:30 start for the Junior Goat. Since there were only four female competitors and no male competitors, perhaps this was too early of a start time for our young members. It is notable that course setter George Minarik initiated the first running of a separate event for our Juniors. I hope that others will carry on this tradition. As it becomes better known and the logistics are smoothed out, the competition should become more substantial.
Julia Doubson was the winner of the Junior Goat race with a time of 27:56. Second was captured by Bronwyn Caplinger in 38:02. Closely behind was Riley Arbuckle in 38:24. Rounding out the competition was Emily Hann in 43:49. Awards of gift cards were handed out to the Juniors before the Senior event started.
The Goat/Kid went off as advertised at 11:00 a.m. The Goat was 10 km with a 745 m climb. The Kid option shorted the distance to 6.2 km with a 450 m climb. Thirty-one hardy orienteers completed the Goat and seventeen more finished the Kid. Pierre Delforge took first place in the Kid with a time of 1:16:48. Manfred Kopisch finished 2nd 6 minutes behind, 1:22:40. Johanna Meriss finished 3rd overall and first woman with a time of 1:23:08. Bob Cooley finished as 3rd man in a time of 1:29:52. Patty Clemo took 2nd in the woman's division with a time of 1:55:41.
Martin Kunz and Christian Degen were in a virtual tie for first place on the Goat at 1:33:12. This was Martin's fifth victory in successive years. Third place was clinched by Jonas Kjall in 1:34:32. Steve Gregg was the first Old Goat to finish the course, and 5th overall, in a time of 1:50:02. Steve retains his lead over Martin in Lifetime Goat points. Margaret Longstret was the only woman to finish the entire course, in 2:45:29.
The Junior Goat course was also offered as a Yellow recreational course. Werner Haag set the pace in 23:23. Daniel Kopisch finished second overall and first Junior in 25:26. Third place was taken by Wayne Caplinger in 26:10. Patty Mueller was the first woman finisher and fourth overall at 31:09.
Many finishers stayed around to enjoy some fruit and sweets while gift-card awards were passed out to the top finishers on the Goat and Kid courses.
I want to thank my volunteers, many who offered help on the spot.
