The annual orienteering event at China Camp was blessed with beautiful summer weather and breathable air (not hazy as had it had been in the weeks leading up to the event). The only drawback to an otherwise lovely day, were the mosquitoes. There were some competitors and staff who were a little chewed up by the end of day.
Mikkel Conradi demonstrated his talent as a course setter in designing seven solid courses. Both Mikkel and I had hoped that the spectator control on the advanced courses would have elicited more cheering from those hanging out at the event center in Miwok Meadows. Given the nature of orienteering in the Bay Area, spectator controls can be a special treat for the audience to see the advanced runners in action.
For this event, we used Self Starts (aka Self-Serve Starts) on the advanced courses, which minimized the number of volunteers needed. The system also minimized our need for hand-held walkie-talkie radios. Given the distance and topography between the Starts and Miwok Meadows, I would have been skeptical if radios would have worked anyway.
The seven courses were set on classic China Camp terrain—up and down with some runnability. The courses for Brown and Green allowed the runners to experience some nice runnable terrain on the southeast side of the main ridge. The Green, Red, and Blue courses visited some areas of the map that had not been used recently. The intermediate course provided some challenges for those who were moving up from Yellow. And the beginners’ courses took advantage of the scenery and the runnable terrain near Miwok Meadows.
There was a lot of positive feedback from the advanced-course runners: the general comment was that these courses were very solid, albeit physically demanding. Thank you to the competitors who provided feedback on the courses.
There were 119 starters between the seven courses. On the beginners’ courses, Karina Masalkovaite came in first on White, and Gavin and Carl Williams from BAOC COOL, finished first on Yellow. On the Intermediate course, Gary Kraght charged through the Orange course to win with a time of 31:03. On Brown, Dana Kunz was the winner. Juha Koskenvuo took 1:00:07 to finish first on the Green course. James Scarborough blazed his way through the Red course to finish with a time of 59:19 and to take first place. The Blue course proved to have the tightest competition with less than two minutes between each of the top three competitors: Francois Leonard took first place with a time of 1:14:23.
This year there was media coverage by the Wildebeat. Steve Sergeant was on site and conducted interviews and gathered other sound materials for an upcoming show on Orienteering. The audience has a worldwide listenership. I am not sure when the show will air. Likely air dates, as of this writing, will fall sometime on or between 8/14/08 and 9/11/08.
On another different note: Mark Blair said that this year’s China Camp also represents a turning point in the BAOC’s history of handing off equipment: Both North and South Bay now have their own sets of e-punch bags and stands.
After his run, Bob Cooley set up and directed his Radio-O near Miwok Meadows, and from what it looked like, there were some advanced orienteers who were having fun with another branch of Orienteering.
Many thanks and much appreciation is due to the people who volunteered for the event and helped to make it success: Joan Roos, Judy Kohler, Greg Ehrensing wore more hats than they expected, and helped out in a wide range of capacities—from set-up to tear down and a few things in between; Shura Kretchetov, Nancy Lindeman, and Jennifer Kerr (GCO) helped with setting up the beginner/intermediate Start and Finish; Gray Kraght was our gatekeeper with a smile; many thanks to Scott Aster, who provided the beginner clinics/orientation; the E-punch crew kept things running smoothly with downloads and results: Jim Fish, Greg Ehrensing, Terry Farrah, Evan Custer, David Meredith, and Toby Ferguson; Ev and Jean Beuerman, who drove up from the South Bay to handle Registration; Rex Winterbottom, who brought some snacks and other goodies (I think most of the goodies disappeared); Michelle Daher, Manfred Kopisch, and Alex Finch manned the beginner and intermediate starts, and kept an eye on the Finish since it was only a shout away; Bjorn Widerstrom, who helped me to carry some stuff down from the advanced Start. Peter Graube stepped in and coordinated course pick-up when Harold and Penny could not make it; Mark Blair, Jim Fish, Victoria Campbell (from West Point), Vicki Woolworth, and Steve Gregg helped to round up the controls.
My thanks to anyone I may have forgotten to list. Your help was appreciated.
