Event Write-Up
By Judy Koehler, Event Director
A perfect fall day, Scott Aster's interesting courses, and a newly updated map made for a very successful National Orienteering Day at Spring Lake Park. With the exception of experienced orienteers on the Sprint Course, the emphasis this year, as was last year, was on youth. A steady stream of families with children, scouts, home schoolers, Brookhaven Middle School, Montgomery High School, and Sacramento State students ventured out on White, Yellow, and Sprint courses.
The team of Navery Eap and Loi Kha from San Francisco charged through the White Course in 27:15 minutes. Wayne Caplinger (43:27) from Berkeley was the first finisher on the Yellow Course, followed by Charles Mighetto (47:37) also of Berkeley. Seventeen experienced orienteers and two groups with sprint maps took on the more technical Sprint Course with James Scarborough (21:35) finishing just ahead of Rex Winterbottom (22:50) and Ben Legg (22:54).
With attendance 75% larger than last year's NOD Spring Lake event, the volunteer staff of Martin Taylor, Jim Hayes, Heidi Whalen, Greg Logan, Greg Ehrensing, Scott Aster, Gary Kraght, and Neil Peterson had to constantly adjust to where they were needed most, even learning new tasks. The heavier attendance resulted in many long hours for the loyal volunteers. Thanks to Deron van Hoff, Manfred Kopisch and his sons Daniel and Philipp for control pickup.
A special thanks goes to Bob Cooley for the time spent updating the map last spring. This year's courses were able to have more inventive route choices and more interesting control placements because the whole Spring Lake portion of the map was useable.
And thanks to those behind the scene: Jill Meuchel from Sonoma Country Parks, Becky Lofton and Phyllis Whearty who helped with publicity, and Angela Borchert for promoting National Orienteering Day in The Daily Republic.
