May 19th was an unusual day for BAOC orienteering in several respects. It was a Saturday, not a usual Sunday event. It was the finale or championship event for the first ever BAOC sprint series. And when I arrived early Saturday morning for set up, I discovered that we would be sharing the venue at Indian Valley College with a large group of dripping youth, otherwise known as a swim meet. A food tent had been erected where we planned to have registration, and beach towels were already beginning to appear on the lawn where we planned to have our Start and Finish areas for the non-sprint courses. Not to worry, orienteers are flexible and we shared.
We actually had two events in one. Rex Winterbottom was ring leader for the 2007 BAOC Sprint Championships, which consisted of a series of four head-to-head sprints in which competitors moved up or down the leaderboard. The ultimate winner and club champion was Francois Leonard, nipping James Scarborough on the final sprint by one second. The leading woman was Stephanie MacLean.
White, Yellow, and Orange courses were offered on and about the Indian Valley campus. The White and Yellow courses also served as the Sprint Championship for younger juniors. On White, a beaming Julia Doubson beat out Cameron Ferguson. Cameron, though, went on to win Yellow as a second course, several minutes ahead of Mike and Marie Marsman. Orange was topped by veteran Evan Custer, with Chris Broekhoff second, and the indefatiguable Cameron Ferguson fifth on his third course of the day.
As is usual at BAOC events, many people pitched in to help, often without being asked to. Special recognition should go to Evan Custer, Trinka Gillis, and Peter Graube, who handled two physically separate E-punch operations, including one with four sequential races. Thanks also to Ev and Jean Beuerman, who made a special run to Safeway to get water and cups for the Sprint participants (somehow the event director—me—missed that crucial detail!). And a huge round of credit goes to Rex Winterbottom, who conceived of the 2007 BAOC sprint series and the championship format, did all of the course planning and setup, and so far in 2007 has been the event director and/or course setter for seven BAOC events. And we are only up to June!
The Indian Valley honor roll of volunteers includes: Scott Aster, Ev & Jean Beuerman, Mark Blair, Mikkel Conradi, Bob Cooley, Evan Custer, Harold & Penny DeMoss, Greg Ehrensing, Jim Fish, Toby Ferguson, Trinka Gillis, Peter Graube, Judy Koehler, Ben Legg, Tomer Maymon, Shirley Parlan, Neil Peterson, James Scarborough, and Rex Winterbottom. Thank you all! And thank you also to any unsung heroes who helped with the event.

These are the corrected times for the first two sprints. About half the people used one of the start units that was 12 to 13 seconds fast. I have added 13 seconds to their times for the first sprint and 12 seconds to the second sprint. (The inconsistency was because of a slight miscommunication about the time difference, and I didn’t want to redo the first sprint again.) – Evan Custer
