The "Tour de Fog" should have been call simply the "Tour" of Golden Gate Park, because the fog didn't show up. In fact, conditions were remarkably pleasant — warm, but not hot. And Golden Gate Park is a treasure of a park with many fascinating sites.
Dwight Freund gave a wonderful tour of the park with his White, Yellow, and Orange courses set with a few plate controls and many more "environmental" controls that required participants to study monuments and signs. Victorious on the White course: George Kelly. Brian Koga bested the rest on the Yellow Course. And Mark Prior absolutely ripped the Orange course in less than a half-hour.
And then there was the USOF Sprint set by the devious Vladimir Gusiatnikov. This wily course setter downplayed the trickiness of his course, some of it unintentional, although most of it was fully premeditated. Obstacles galore and radical changes of direction rewarded careful map readers. I believe Vladimir has best shown so far the potential of the Golden Gate Park map for world-class Sprint orienteering, and perhaps someday we can host a series of national or international level events including a memorable course like this. Mikkel Conradi was well up to the challenge on the men's side, followed closely by Mark Prior and Ido Green. Clare Durand and Leslie Minarik topped the women's field.
This was a delightful event, and I thank all who attended and our large cast of helpers. In particular, Mark Prior and Brad Wetmore obtained the necessary park permissions, which made the event possible.
