Event Write-Up
By Marina Keating
We had another great event today at Stanford with 175 participants, slightly fewer than last year, but a great turnout considering the weather forecast. I'm not sure where the rain went, but I'm not complaining. Peter Graham, Russell Neilson, and Alex Saltman did a terrific job setting fun, interesting courses that everyone seemed to enjoy. The strategically placed water hazard between controls 6 and 7 on the Sprint made for some very mud-spattered sprinters at the end of the race.
Mark Prior won the Sprint with a very convincing time of 16:29, Mikkael Conradi was second in 18:35, and Rex Winterbottom was 23 seconds behind with a time of 18:58.
On the White course, Sheila Shea and Andy Quon came in first, with Laura McVey, Aditi Joshu, and Alexa Strutner second, and the team of Sami Strutner, Haley Utley, and Jean Tyan close behind in third. Yellow was the most popular course with sixty participants. Julia Song and Howard had the fastest time here, with Daniel Kopisch in second, and Barbara Straka in third. The race for the first two spots in the Short Mystery-O was the tightest of the day with only 7 seconds separating the first place team of Mikkael Conradi and Lauren Knight and second place Donatas Zigmantas. Bill Straka was third.
The Sprint didn't seem to take much out of Mark Prior and Steve Gregg, since they came in 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Long Mystery-O a few minutes behind winner Mattias Vangbo.
I had a great day, I hope you all did too. As well as seeing some great runs, it was wonderful to see the excited newcomers who had such a great time on White that they couldn't wait to go out again and do Yellow.
As usual things could not have gone so well without the help of a large number of people. Thank you very much to the following: Ev and Jean Beuerman who did their usual great job on registration, Bill and Barbara Straka who helped out on registration (Bill also spent some time doing starts), Nancy Lindeman, Jim Fish, and Joe Maffei who showed up extra early and were there to help get things organized, Joe also helped out with results and control pickup, while Nancy did starts and Jim did finishes, Paul SanGiorgio did an early run to check that all the Sprint controls were still in place, and helped with results and control pickup. Tony Pinkham, Steve Gregg, Ido Green, and Jeff Lanam did starts, Bob Cooley did his usual great job with the maps, Alan Glendinning was very helpful and flexible when it came to picking up various pieces of equipment from him, Harold and Penny DeMoss did tent transport. Special thanks to Chuck Spalding who, as well as helping out in various ways today, patiently answered my questions and gave me lots of good advice in the weeks leading up to the event, and special thanks also to Alex Saltman and Russell Neilson who helped out today in many different ways.
