Event Write-Up

It rained heavily in Marin the day before, but Sunday, January 29, was a glorious day for 224 orienteering enthusiasts at Indian Valley. Between the sunshine and the soft verdant hills, course conditions were ideal. Now if only we could have cut back on some of the climb!
As has been the case for a couple of years, the Marin Open Space District restricts orienteering to a small portion of Indian Valley Open Space and limits the number of orienteers. Luckily, the campus of Indian Valley Community College extends well into the hills south of the college. So White through Brown courses were offered to all comers, and Red and Green courses were available for club members who have been, or will be, event directors and/or course setters for O' events in 2005/2006.
On White, the brother and sister team of Adam and Danielle Strauss crossed the finish line 16 seconds ahead of the Peterson group. I don't think I have ever seen such enthusiastic winners! Yellow was won convincingly by upcoming club junior Jukka Karras, with Alexali Brubaker and newcomer Dan Shu also turning in strong runs. Orange was bested by Adam Citarella, with Marie-Josee Parayre close behind. A very physical Brown course had its share of in-shape speedsters, with Piers Newbery being the speediest, and Stephanie MacLean as the top woman. The Green course was won by our club mapping guru Bob Cooley. On Red, James Scarborough turned in an amazing 10 minute per kilometer performance on a course in which the advertised climb of 5-1/2 percent was considered by all to be on the low side. Top woman was Sofia Olsson, visiting from Sweden.
A BAOC orienteering event with over 200 participants, particularly one with over 100 newcomers, can't happen without a cast of supporting volunteers. So thank you goes to Scott Aster, Mark Blair, Eric Bone, Jon Bonwick, Rob Clima, Bob Cooley, Evan Custer, Harold and Penny DeMoss, Terry Farrah, Jim Fish, William Gilmore, Anne Gorby, Rosemary Johnson, Judy Koehler, Jeff Lanam, Nancy Lindeman, Rory MacLean, Laura McLeegan, Leslie Minarik, Eric Ohlund, Bill Papendick, Shirley Pierce, Joan Roos, James Scarborough, Jennifer Stilwell, Jeff Watson, and Rex Winterbottom. A special thank you for George Minarik, who again demonstrated his skills as one of BAOC's best course-setters.
Plans for 2007 at Indian Valley include sprints and Trail-O. Stay tuned.
