Event Write-Up
By Jeff Lanam
National Orienteering Day weekend opened with a meet at Coyote Hills Regional Park, perhaps the most centrally-located of BAOC’s venues. The Bay breezes showed up this year, making the weather perfect for the event. The biggest complaint I heard was that the golden dry grass was as slick as glass, making spikes a definite plus. Oh, there were also complaints about the hills, but those are always there.
Several youth groups showed up in force, including Boy Scout Troop 110, Girl Scout Troops 981 and 1579, and a large Navy JROTC group from Enterprise High School way up in Redding.
One of a event director’s worst fears came true when word came that an orienteer was down along a trail. Shirley Pierce, a BAOC member since 1978, had been struck by a cyclist. Another cyclist (I think) rode up to tell us and went on to alert the rangers. They quickly went to the scene, followed by Fremont Fire Department, Fremont Police, and the East Bay Parks Fire Department. She was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a separated shoulder. I know we all wish her a speedy recovery.
Tyler Robinson of NJROTC bested a large field on the White course, the most popular course of the day for a change. Valeria and Yuri Fedyk raced around the Yellow course in just under thirty minutes. Robin Gustafsson took just over an hour on the challenging Orange course. The Long Orange course was won by Andrew Masalkovas.
My thanks go out to the volunteers, who made it easy for me. Most of the advance work was done by the course-setters, Jim Fish, Nancy Lindeman, and Dean French. Jim and Nancy also jumped in wherever they were needed during the event. Registration was handled by James and Zion Wilson. Kelly Wells did clinics all morning to whomever wanted one. This was the first time epunch has been used at Coyote Hills. Since the finish was right at the EP table, Trinka Gilles and Tony Pinkham were able to handle both. Chuck Spalding, Mark Blair, Steve Gregg, and Nancy handled the start. Mark, Steve, and Mitsumi Sugizaki picked up controls.
