Event Write-Up

By Penny DeMoss

Soooo, what was going on with control #125? We already had the Hillside of Death. Do we now have the Reentrant from Hell?

On Saturday, almost everyone had big trouble finding that control, which was on all three courses. Some went right to it, some looked long and hard and never did find it, but most beat the broom long enough to eventually locate it. I was surprised as I thought that Dwight said he'd used GPS to put out the controls. Bob Cooley ran with his GPS and sent me an e-mail showing where he'd located the control, so that I could find it and move it to the proper place. This morning I went out and found it where Bob said (and almost everyone else on Sat. agreed) it was placed, which was approximately 100 m NE of the center of the circle. I went on a bearing about 100 m towards the circle, which put me well past the small reentrant in question since that reentrant is actually much higher than mapped. I went out to the jeep track bend and came back on a bearing (the way the Short-course and probably Medium-course people would approach the control) and saw that the control was indeed way too low. I decided to compromise and move it up to the lower part of the circle. (By the way, that small reentrant doesn't even leave the main one at that angle...) My thinking was that it would be high for people coming from the bend, and low for the people on Long, but that it would be visible for all without too much effort. Well, as was the case on Saturday, some people went right to it, some looked a bit and saw it, some never found it. But, many thought that it was about 75 m too low ... so, in other words, it was right on Saturday!!!!! I think we all agree on one thing, let's not put a control in that area again.

Anyway, I want to thank everyone for being good sports about it. I was pleasantly surprised that nobody "got their knickers in a twist". (At least not to my face anyway.) Believe me, I know how annoying it is. If control 125 was the only one you missed, I'm listing you as a finisher, although, of course, everyone should realize that some people spent more time looking for it than others.

Thank you Dwight for setting the courses. Everyone had a good time, and it may eventually be funny, since there were people both days who swear it was right.

I will list the results separately, since people had more trouble on Saturday than on Sunday. The weather was the same both days. No rain...some sun...good running conditions. Thank you all for coming, and thank you for volunteering during the year.

Course Setter's Comments

Based on [the remarks on the BayONet (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/baoc/)], I'm going to hazard an explanation. There is probably a third, unmapped parallel reentrant in the area. I approached the area from the east, went as far as the second re-entrant (which is where many seem to think the flag should have been) and confirm to myself that it matched the map's indication of a rather sharp reentrant at the top of a large open area going down to the main stream bed. I did not go even further west to discover a third reentrant.

I went back to the first reentrant to the east (perhaps 75 m to the ENE) and placed the flag in a fairly clear area just below the small clearing shown on the map. I read the map as showing that reentrant to continue shallowly through the clear area to the top of the ridge.

Again, my apologies for spoiling the course. I guess it shows that even the most informal meet should be vetted.
