Event Write-Up

By Mark Prior and Ian Tidswell

With almost 100 competitors, and an early visit from the cooling marine fog layer, San Francisco's Twin Peaks area was the place to be last Sunday, July 24th. The introduction of BAOC's newest map was a huge success, attracting many first-timers interested in exploring our fair city and a decent cadre of experienced orienteers honing their skills.

As expected, given the size of the map and surprising angle of many streets, route choice was critical for this competition. With the density of stairs, small park areas, and tiny alleys on the map, competitors saw a side of SF that is rarely espied, "We saw so much of San Francisco we hadn't seen before".

Time management turned out to be the deciding factor, though, as the dense 1:15,000 scale and 20' contours belied the effort required to travel through the course. In exchange for the beautiful views at registration, competitors had to finish the event with a final large climb.

In the 50-minute category Anna Zaster gathered 14 points with a few minutes to spare for an easy win. Brian Koga was not rewarded for his strong efforts at 22 points, as his overtime brought him down to second place with 14 "slower" points.

In the 100-minute category, competition was high at the mass start for bragging rights at victory on a virgin map, "Yep, that was me in ought-five -- those were the days". Early confidence from those unfamiliar with the scope of the map was soon replaced by a frantic realization that intelligent route planning would trump speed and navigation.

Mattias Vangbo combined his fitness and speed with a unique route that took him southeast to gather several high-point controls in Noe Valley, then directly across the treacherous and steep Glen Canyon to gather several more remote western controls before returning along the spine of the Twin Peaks ridge. His Herculean effort at being only 14 seconds late earned him 79 points.

Rex "How could you not get all the points on this map?" Winterbottom actually managed to gather the most points (83), but was penalized for his six late minutes to take second. Local terrain expert (and future map checker) Deron van Hoff found an impressive 79 points, but was similarly late for a solid third place, followed by Tapio Karras. Pre-race favorite, former track star, and experienced SF navigator Mike Prindiville, apparently confused the wiggly brown contour lines for streets and was the only one to visit our sucker control on top of SF's highest peak, Mt. Davidson, costing him a time penalty that wasted his impressive 78 overall points, putting him in fifth.

With the newness and complexity of event logistics, we relied on a faithful crew of volunteers for this event, including Scott Aster, Leif Kirschenbaum, and Peter Pulido for registration and clinics. Tony Pinkham, Joan Roos, Deron van Hoff helped manage unforeseen logistics, while Rex, Collin, and Corrie took care of starts. Vlad handled finishes and actuarial duties. As always, thanks to Rosemary for permit efforts, especially at a new venue. And lastly, thanks to Bob Cooley for his patience in helping two novice map makers put together BAOC's newest pride and joy.

Since this event used existing city features (signs, numbers, etc), it can be considered to be a semi-permanent course. We are happy to send extra copies of the map and clues (for a small fee; while supplies last) to anyone interested in exploring on their own. Please contact if interested. We're looking forward to seeing an even bigger crowd for next summer's event.
