We had a fantastic turnout for this year’s Stanford University event! 187 groups or individuals participated, including 43 first-timer groups on White, six scout groups, an entire birthday party, and two individuals who ran three courses each! The weather was perfect, there wasn’t any poison oak, and Jamba Juice was only 10 meters from the finish line.
Tony’s courses received a plethora of compliments. Runners said the Window-O courses were thoughtfully planned, so there was always a way through the buildings just where you wanted it. The map was especially accurate, and he led people into areas of the campus that they hadn’t discovered before.
Evan Custer’s course setting workshop went well, with over 15 people now enthusiastically looking forward to planning their first courses.
Club president Ian Tidswell presided over the BAOC annual meeting and a quorum was met.
Matt Polizzotto and Nadia Singh took first on the White course, with the team of Susan Timpe, Leah Timpe, and Devin Collins in second. The Yellow course winner was George Minarik, and second place went to Johanna Merriss. (Hmmm…don’t they usually run advanced courses? Special circumstances forced them to run a shorter course.) Third and fourth place went to Elizabeth Grewal and Jukka Karras, who would have been first and second if George and Johanna hadn’t usurped them.
Emily’s birthday party -- all eleven celebrators -- did the Yellow course together. She had her party at the Stanford event for the first time last year, and decided to do it again.
The 75-minute Score-O was the most popular advanced course, with 31 runners, five of whom found all 25 controls. Winner Mikael Prindiville found all the controls and still finished nearly 16 minutes early! Second place was Rex Winterbottom, only four minutes behind Mikael. The 50-minute Score-O winner was Oren Rigbi, who found 19 controls -- five more than second and third place finishers Nick Corsano and Frank Markowitz.
45 people dared to try a Window-O course. Joe Maffei won on Orange, with a finishing time under 31 minutes, and then proceeded to run two more courses. Second place on Orange was won by the team of Adi Zarchi, Eric Beaser, Christa Stark, and Josh Levine. The Green Window-O was won by (who else?) Dan Greene, with a finishing time of 35 minutes. Event Director Misha Lipatov finished second. The Red Window-O winner was Syd Reader, with Thorsten Graeve in second place.
One drawback to holding the event on Community Day -- if a runner doesn’t come back, you won’t be able to find their car in the parking lot, especially when it is identified as a “Jeep Cherokee�, with no license plate given.
Stanford graduates may have had an advantage over Cal graduates. Cal graduates will get their chance in June.

Sincere gratitude goes to Misha Lipatov, the Stanford Orienteering Club, Nancy Lindeman, Bob Cooley, and Tony Pinkham. Misha fought his way through many levels of Stanford bureaucracy to get the event permit, Stanford Orienteering sponsored the event, Nancy recruited and coordinated all the volunteers, Bob Cooley printed maps at short notice, and Tony designed innovative courses after directing three Ski-Os earlier this year.
